DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

The NSW Government is developing a model of a Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme (DVDS) to pilot in NSW. The DVDS is similar to an initiative that was successfully introduced in the United Kingdom, called Clare’s Law.

The disclosure scheme is based on research that demonstrates domestic violence is rarely a one off incident but is more commonly a pattern of abusive and controlling behaviour with the highest recidivism rate of any crime. In Australia, 65.1% of victims of current partner violence have experienced more than one incident of violence. The primary objective of the DVDS will be to help prevent domestic violence by informing people of their partner’s history of domestic violence offending. A DVDS allows people to make informed decisions about their relationship and safety, to seek assistance or undertake safety planning.

Here is a discussion paper about the proposal.

Please see the PDF document here for a summary of the new Domestic Violence Evidence In Chief reforms that come into effect on June 1 2015. Training for Police will occur progressively over the next 12 months.

Improving our approach ~

This conference will provide people developing domestic violence policy and delivering domestic violence programs with practical guidance on what they can do to move us closer to ending domestic

violence.

The conference will focus on:

• Primary prevention

• Early intervention

• Response

Special attention will be paid to high risk groups like Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander women, women from CALD communities and women with disability.

Delegates will leave the conference with the most up-to-date information and a better understanding of the most effective approaches to the above areas.

With momentum building in this area (VIC Royal Commission, SA inquiry, QLD Taskforce, Senate Inquiry) the time is right to explore the practical things we can do to move closer to ending

domestic violence.

Speakers include Rosie Batty, Anna Bligh and Anne Hollonds NSW Domestic & Family Violence Council; Professor Bob Pease Deakin University; Dr Eman Sharobeem Immigrant Women’s Health Service; Donna Chung Curtin University; Judge Robyn Sexton Federal Circuit Court of Australia

Susan Elvery Relationships Australia; Beverley Dobie and Margaret Lewis YWCA NSW; Assoc. Professor Leanne Dowse &Dr Aminath Didi University of New South Wales Women with Disabilities Australia (WWDA) Julie Oberin

INFO SHARING

New Referral Forms

Please click here to upload our updated referral form to both our Post Separation Co-operative Parenting Groups and Counselling program, for clients who are going through separation for services to use from now on.

If you have any clients who would benefit from this service in Nowra, Ulladulla, Moruya or Bega please complete the attached form with the permission of your client and either fax or email it to our intake team.

Once the referral has been received someone from our intake team will contact the client and complete the intake with them.  Where possible they will be booked into a group or individual Our Children or Aboriginal Building Connections workshop or PSCP Counselling.

Where clients are unable to make any of the proposed dates they will notify the counsellor or PSCP worker who will then contact the client to arrange a suitable time to meet.  This is more likely for Ulladulla, Moruya and Bega areas.

Please note that there is some flexibility in the Moruya and Bega areas regarding the venue for meetings between the counsellor and client where absolutely necessary.  This is negotiated between the client and counsellor.

Here are the updated flyers for 'Our Children' workshops 2015 & 'Aboriginal Building Connections' program.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions relating to PSCP.
