Less-known lessons of the renewable energy sector in Mexico

 

Renewable energy is expected to account for close to half of electricity generation in Mexico by 2035. As a result of the enormous scope for growth in the sector, it is unsurprising that it continues to galvanize excitement among investors. However, in addition to the financial and environmental impact clean energy is having on Mexico, the industry has also left behind terrific case studies in terms of the impact projects have on communities, by way of working with them, in order to build local expertise and create win-win solution for companies and communities alike.

Has the United Kingdom really resigned as a World Power?

On Friday, the Washington Post published an opinion piece by Fareed Zakaria.  The piece lamented the fact that the United Kingdom had ‘resigned’ as a world power.  For the original article see here.

 

Responding to David Cameron’s first speech outside Downing Street after being re-elected with a surprising majority, Zakaria writes that: 

 

    ‘[c]onfronting a world of challenges — including Greece’s possible exit from the euro, a massive migration crisis on Europe’s shores, Ukraine’s perilous state, Russia’s continued intransigence, the advance of the Islamic State and the continuing chaos in the Middle East — Cameron chose to talk about . . . a plan to ensure that hospitals in the United Kingdom will be better staffed on weekends.’

 

Of course, Zakaria acknowledges that ‘all politics is local’, and in these terms Cameron’s decision to focus on the NHS is understandable.   However, Zakaria’s broader point does provide some pause for thought.

Mexico's central bank lowered its growth outlook for this year and next on Tuesday, flagging concerns about the sluggish economy, but the bank's governor Agustin Carstens signaled further rate cuts were unlikely.
