Celebration of Life

"Eight Rungs of Service and Giving"

Rev. David Carl Olson

11 a.m. in the Sanctuary

Maimonides taught in the Golden Ladder of Charity that aiding someone to become self-sufficient is the highest level of religious responsibility for those of us who wish to serve others. Richard Gilbert united service with study, witnessing, advocacy and organizing to create a comprehensive program of social justice action.
Ordination of Amy Williams Clark

Sunday, May 31

4 p.m. in the Sanctuary

Rev. Nancy McDonald Ladd, Senior Minister of River Road Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Bethesda, MD

(ministers, interns and seminarians invited to robe at 3:30 p.m.)

We are looking for volunteers to contribute to the reception after Amy Williams Clark's ordination on May 31st.

Click here to view the potluck list and sign up to bring a dish or to help with setup/cleanup.
June 7: Don't Want to Sleep Through the Revolution

11 a.m. in the Sanctuary

Interim DRE Karen Lee Scrivo reflects on her own journey to Black Lives Matter and how she and Unitarian Universalists can remain awake and engaged during this time of social change. She draws inspiration from Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s remarks at the 1966 Unitarian Universalist Association's General Assembly as well as today's UUs and other people of faith working to ensure that black and brown lives matter as much as white lives.

Board Listening Session on Church Budget

The Board of Trustees will host an informational Listening Session on the church's budget for the upcoming fiscal year at 12:45 p.m. Sunday May 31st in the Parish Hall.  The Board will present a draft budget and obtain input from the congregation prior to finalizing its budget proposal, to be presented to the congregation for a vote at the Annual Meeting on June 14th. This is an important opportunity to be heard in advance of the Annual Meeting on issues such as funding for staff positions. Your Board values your opinion!
Annual Meeting

Please save the date for the Annual Meeting, to be held following services on Sunday June 14th. An official announcement, including nominees for open Officer, Board Trustee and Nominating Committee positions, will follow upon receipt of the nominees (The Nominating Committee is hard at work putting finishing touches on the slate!)
The Transformation at Dayspring Gardens Continues!

Please Join us for our next Volunteer Workday at the gardens at Dayspring on Saturday May 30th 10 AM to 1 PM. As always, families and children are welcome!

We will be mulching, weeding, watering and planting. Our baby tomato and pepper plants "disappeared" so donations of plants are welcome.

Please bring newspapers, sunscreen, a hat and gloves (if you have them).

The gardens have changed dramatically since our last workday in early May! Hope you will come and see for yourselves how terrific they look.

Hoot! Hoot!
We’re looking for a few more OWL facilitators! Are you interested?

Our Whole Lives (OWL) is a tremendously important and exciting program offered to middle and high schoolers at First Unitarian. This comprehensive sexuality education program is considered the gold standard for the country. Not only is it great for participants, but it’s transformative for the facilitators as well. We’d like to have a Senior OWL (10-12 grade) group beginning in January. We have the kids; we just need the facilitators. If you’re interested, please contact Laura Laing at llaing@comcast.net for details. Training is required, and there are four options relatively near-by. We are especially in need of male facilitators. Training starts in July, so contact Laura soon for details.
Cook for Our Daily Bread

Saturday, June 30, starting at 8:30 - a little later if you're so inclined.  Join us for a fun cooking session.  Coffee and a snack promised.

Online Pledging and Paying

Many people pay their pledges with automatic payments, either monthly or weekly or as they can.  This is an easy and efficient way to do it!  If you are now an electronic payer, please remember that we still need a pledge from you for the coming year.  If we manage your payments, we will make any necessary adjustments starting with your July donation.  If you manage your own payments, please remember to update your information if your pledge has changed.

The Giving Tab at the top of the church website has options for both pledging and paying. Lost your pledge form (or hate paper?), you can pledge online even if you do not plan to pay electronically.

If you have any questions about our electronic options, please contact me at mariannefr@aol.com or call the church office and leave a message.

Thank you!

Assistant Treasurer

From the Social Action Clearinghouse

Spring is here and it is time to buy your Fair Trade Chocolate from the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC), our denomination's service organization.  The chocolate is delicious and is made from cacao only from small farmer co-ops.  Fair trade chocolate makes a great Graduation gift.  Please stop by the UUSC table during coffee hour to learn more about how you can become a member of UUSC.  If you are already a member, please stop by and check your status so your membership does not lapse.  An updated list will be published after the membership drive ends on June 30, 2015.  Membership is a way to live our UU values in our country and in the world.
Our Change for Change partner for May

Our Change for Change partner for May is Unitarian Universalists for Social Justice (UUSJ), National Capital Region.  Our church is a member of UUSJ which coordinates regular visits to Capitol Hill policy makers to represent UU principles and values.  Priority issues are the environment and climate change, immigration reform, LGBTQ Rights and economic justice.  More information is available during Fellowship Hour at the Social Action Clearinghouse (SAC) table.
