A sense of space and solitude is created in this final piece, a convertible pavilion. This garden structure hovers on the western slope of upper Queen Anne hill, and nestles into the hillside. Imagined as a sculptural landscape element, this retreat and gathering pavilion transforms with the seasons and quickly changes as the weather demands. Inspired by the impressive prospects of Elliott Bay, Magnolia and the Olympic Mountains to the west, the design delicately blends the pavilion into the client's existing compound, protects the roots of a grand elm tree and respects neighbor's views. We continue our successful associations in China! As design leader, Robert Edson Swain Architect + Design, along with our China team: won 1st prize nationally in the planning design for Luoyang City's Yi/Luo River Competition!  This is the most historic birthplace of Chinese culture -- the former Middle Kingdom -- the three original Kingdoms: Xia, Shang & Zhou, starting in the 21st century BC. It was in the Zhou Kingdom where Taoism was established. Later, two significant Dynasties emerged, the Han and Tang. During the Tang Dynasty, Buddhism was welcomed and established in China.

Our design utilizes a matrix of parks reflecting the geographic relationship between the five city states. Ecological planning connects history through a system of waterways, while preserving farmland and integrating modern city development.
