PROGRAM INFORMATION
JANE CONNER-ZISER
Advanced Portrait Retouching / Live Demo and Group Discussion

Much has been said about basic portrait retouching.  But if you photograph a lot of people, you know that there are challenges that go beyond “normal” retouching, such as glass glare, messy hair, receded teeth, opening eyes, fixing clothing and removing unwanted objects from the background.  In this presentation Jane will address the fastest, easiest and best looking ways of handling these problems, plus take questions from the group on topics of specific interest.  In addition Jane will show you how to enhance lighting, feature eyes and bring out the best in portrait imagery.  Bring your questions and see if Jane can help you with some of your own retouching challenges!  Here are some samples of Jane's great work.
CREATIVE QUARTERLY
The next Creative Quarterly will be judged at the June meeting.  The title is:  "Squint Your Eyes, and Look Closer".  Challenge your creative talent and shoot for this intriguing title.  You receive 10 Photographer of the Year points for entering and 20 points if you win!
RSVP LIST
Don't want to hassle with emailing your RSVP for each meeting?  Become a permanent RSVP Member and skip the hassle.  As a Permanent RSVP Member, you will be added to the attending list on a monthly basis.  The only time you have to send in an email response is when you are NOT ATTENDING.  Otherwise, there is nothing more you need to do.

...From Your President
                            Donna Williams, Turner Photography
Hello Everyone!

Who am I?  If you struggle to answer that question every day, you are not alone.  Every creative entrepreneur—in fact every small business owner—is taunted by that every question.  On certain days when “Who am I?” pounds your head like a drum, it can be difficult to pick up your camera, write a blog post or interact with clients.

Sometimes you gain a sense of clarity only to realize that someone has already marketed their business in the very way you believe uniquely defines yours.  And that awareness can stop you in your tracks.  Well, don’t let it!

First of all defining who you are never ends.  Once you head in one direction, experience and learning tug in another.  Second no one else will define themselves the exact same way that you will.  As photographers, we continually challenge ourselves to put our unique stamp on our work.  And third, what you are driven to create is exactly what the world needs to see.

Listen to inspiration.  It is normal for us to experience an ebb and flow of inspiration and boredom.  Expect this and embrace it.  If it wasn’t for the blessing of tedium, you would not have cause to perk up, listen and try new things.  As you explore and push your limits, you may worry that the marketplace can’t support that kind of work.  But in reality, this type of work calls into your creative genius and gives life to opportunities you never dreamed of.

Seek novel ideas.  Like many others, I use Pinterest.  I leverage it to collect ideas for personal projects as well as gain inspiration from other photographers to try new things.  It is a great way to jump into unchartered territory.  Research other photographers, not to copy but to recreate an idea that is uniquely yours.  Whatever means you can think of to “think of out of the box” will push you to a new level and make others notice.

Share your work.  Don’t forget to share your bold new creations with your audience.  Social Media is a great avenue to do this.  If you are feeling a bit timid about doing this because it may not resemble what you normally do, be brave and share it anyway.  Otherwise you will never know if the work you do in private could touch someone else.  Another way to share your new work is by competing in Print of the Month, Creative Quarterly and Salon.  And if you are really brave, compete in state, national and international competitions.

As professional photographers, we will always challenge ourselves to define us in the present as well as the future.  It is that thing inside our heads that makes us tick!

I look forward to seeing all of you at the next meeting.  Don’t forget to wear your name badge.

Thank you,
Donna Williams

Horsing Around in Costa Rico
Gigi O'Dea

On a recent family vacation to Costa Rica, I was introduced to a world of amazing scenery and wildlife.  Costa Rica is known for their laid back lifestyle and beautiful landscape.  Their characteristic phrase, “Pura Vida”, which means pure life or full of life sums up the culture in which they embrace.  While staying at the Leaves and Lizards Retreat, near the Arenal Volcano, I had the pleasure of photographing the staff members for the facility.   I was thrilled when they invited me to return again in August to photographically document the Eponaquest spa vacation and workshop for all the participants.

Leaves and Lizards is known for their Eponaquest riding workshops in which they use horses to interact with humans encouraging participants to look within themselves to find balance, regain strength,  and renew spirit.  They have had much success in working with victims of abuse, or traumas, as well as helping people work through grief or other issues that that they have had to deal with, even including stress.  Besides the equestrian based workshops that they offer, they host photography workshops as well.  One will be held in September, and the other will be held in December of this year.   For more information, check out their website at:
www.leavesandlizards.com.
