Tackling the skills gap

The NCTA has won funding from the UK Commission for Employment and Skills for a new project that will track the trajectory of hospitality staff, working initially with a small sample of hotels in Bournemouth.

The hospitality industry suffers from an image of long hours with little reward. This project aims to help employees fast-track their careers through increased training and motivation, to move up to higher salaries. It is part of a wider UK Futures Programme with projects in the hospitality industry nationwide.

We’ll be running our final free introduction to Bournemouth ahead of the summer season on 23 June, 2pm at the Marsham Court Hotel. This fast-paced, hour-long session is perfect for new staff, highlighting all that’s on offer for visitors plus a basic overview of customer care.

Festival of Learning

As part of Bournemouth University’s third Festival of Learning, the NCTA will be giving a short and snappy round-up of our industry-focused research. Lightning talks: An adrenaline rush of research will be held on Monday 13 July at BU’s Talbot campus, with the audience voting for its favourite presentation, followed by a drinks reception.

Other tourism talks include a session at Boscombe Pier from 10am on Tuesday 14 July to find out why people really do like to be beside the seaside and why the beach is important to our wellbeing. An interactive SMART tourism workshop also on Tuesday 14 July, co-organised with Bournemouth Tourism, showcases the latest tourism technology and how it can be used.

Great potential for coastal tourism

Since the NCTA’s outset in 2013, we’ve been analysing the nature of coastal tourism – its challenges and opportunities and ways to encourage growth. By pulling together national and local research, academic papers, Government statistics and data from VisitEngland, we’ve produced a new report –
Coastal Tourism in 2015 – outlining our findings and recommendations to boost seaside resorts.

English coastal tourism is worth more than £7bn and yet it’s been the focus of relatively little research. Our report concludes that with the right resources, there is significant opportunity for growth.
