                                                                                                         July 2015
Summertime, and the living is busy! We've packed this month with lots of fun and educational things to do. Our Summer Reading Program kicks off at 6:30 p.m. Friday, July 3, at Red Hook Firehouse. Come join in the fun.

Be sure to stop by the ol' octagon and pick up a calendar, check out this month's doings below or go to our online calendar. Can't wait to see you!
Please share our newsletter with other library lovers.

Sculpture Expo Returns

"Calypso" by Leon Smith now graces our front lawn as part of Red Hook Community Art Network's Sculpture Expo 2015.

Thanks go out to the installation crew and to Rita Gentile for organizing this award-winning event each year. Join us for a discussion about the role of public art 6 p.m. Thursday, July 9, at the Elmendorph Inn, and stay tuned for other programming related to this year's Sculpture Expo.

Introducing Book Bundles

Thanks to a generous donation from Red Hook Rotary, we now offer Book Bundles to our young patrons.

These are themed collections of picture books just waiting to be plucked off the shelves and brought home.

Grab a collection on fish, trucks, princesses or many other topics.

Maker Fridays

We're bringing STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) learning to life at the library. Maker Fridays launched in June, with Paul Agne and Jesse Rolfe leading the way, teaching us about how electricity works with squishy circuits or bristlebots, or some basic physics with the veggie derby.

Join us every other Friday (July 10 and 24) at 4:30 p.m. when we learn by doing, combining our love for all things science, technology and engineering into a fun hands-on program.

High School Maker Labs

RHPL staff collaborated with Red Hook High School librarian Tanya Sasvary as part of our effort to bring library activities offsite and introduce maker programs to the Red Hook community.

In the final weeks before summer vacation, we launched our Maker Lab program at RHHS, inviting students to participate in small craft projects during their lunch periods.

From week one to week two, our attendance doubled and students walked away with upcycled t-shirt bracelets, bottle cap magnets and handmade envelopes.

We plan to continue this partnership in the fall with a series of more high-tech, after school maker programs.

Knitting Without Borders

Local knitters participated in the Knit-in-public Day on a beautiful June Saturday, knitting—and chatting—on the library's porch the 13th.

This was a worldwide event to celebrate "better knitting through stitching together" in 56 countries.
