“When you have a sense of humour, it helps put life in perspective and enables you to make it through this thing we call existence in a much easier manner. Laugh, be light, and laugh some more.” - Dan Goldberg

PROARTE DANCERS ...

These North Shore dancers from ProArte, age 12-17, have earned the honour of being invited to perform on stage in New York this summer. The group earned the right to dance at Nationals by winning the Critics Choice award for their contemporary piece "Where from Here" performed at the regional convention in Washington State in January.

Please help these girls make their dream of performing in New York come true: Ballerina Team with NYC Dream

KIM DIXON

Q: What makes you jump for joy?
A: When I see a student of mine finally understand what I've been trying to get out of them. And those little successes you see every class.

Q. Your experience doing jumping photos?
A:
It was fun. I was happy to do it with my girls. They definitely bring me out of my shell.

Q: What inspires you in life?

A: I am inspired everyday by my students as well as music and nature.

Q: Your greatest passion?
A: Dance. Being able to convey a message through the universal language of movement is a beautiful gift.

Q: Driving Force?
A:
To better myself. Everyday piece of choreography I do I try to improve on the last piece I did. If you aren't moving forward you might as well be moving backwards. In this ever changing art form you need to continue to evolve to stay current and contemporary.

Q. Philosophy?
A: That's a really tough question for me. I used to say dance like no body's watching because I was really concerned what people thought of me. However I now know you can't please everyone. As long as you are proud of what you do you are a success.

Q: Anything in the world?
A:
I would like to teach dance at university, and develop a program. There aren't enough in Canada. I went to SFU and it was a great experience. But as I'm watching my kids graduate and advising them what to do, where to go, there's really only a couple university programs in Canada. So more often than not I have to suggest the USA. Which is expensive and hard to get a job post graduation. You could say I'm presently working towards this. I'm working on another teaching exam which will lead me to potentially working on my masters.

Q: Working on?
A:
I have this piece of choreography that is about bullying. My director Astrid Sherman and I have been working towards developing it into an hour length work to tour schools and educate on bullying and how to eradicate it from lives.

Mini Bio:

I came to pro Arte as a teacher in 2011. Astrid Sherman (the director of Proarte) was my teacher at another school from when I was 6-14. We had been in contact while I was in Africa (for a semester through SFU) and she offered me some classes to sub and it just grew from there.

Through dance I have had the opportunity to travel the world, Brazil, Ghana, London, North Carolina just to name a few. I hope this trip to New York for my girls is just the beginning.
