 This year’s World Environmental Day with the motto "Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care" is a reminder of the shared responsibility we all have in using natural resources sensibly to ensure sustainability, peace and security. Environmental challenges can lead to tensions. Environmental co-operation, on the other hand, can contribute to building trust at all levels.
As part of its comprehensive approach to security, the OSCE has been supporting its participating States for more than a decade in implementing the UNECE Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-Making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters (Aarhus Convention), and the establishment of a network of 59 Aarhus Centres in 14 countries.
These Centres serve as a bridge between the government and citizens in addressing environmental issues, and work to raise awareness and promote public participation in environmental decision-making and building a sustainable future.

What are the Aarhus Centres?
The Aarhus Centres provide platforms to engage citizens, governments and the private sector in a dialogue on environmental challenges. Access to information, public participation in environmental decision-making and access to justice in environmental matters are the pillars of the 1998 Aarhus Convention. Regional co-operation
As part of the 2015 Aarhus Centres Annual Meeting on 3-4 June 2015 in Vienna, Aarhus Centres from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Serbia signed a Joint Declaration, stating their commitment to strengthen partnership and co-operation among the 13 Aarhus Centres in South-East Europe. Environment and Security Initiative (ENVSEC)
The ENVSEC initiative is a partnership of the OSCE, the UN Development Programme, the UN Environment Programme, the UN Economic Commission for Europe, the Regional Environmental Centre for Central and Eastern Europe, and NATO as an associated partner to address environment and security challenges in Eastern Europe, South-East Europe, Central Asia and the South Caucasus. It aims to address common risks through co-operation by offering countries a shared pool of expertise and resources. Learn More
