4) PEIBWA Upcoming Events

5) Monday, June 15 is the 10th Anniversary of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

Getting Past Ageism
Ageism happens when people are discriminated against because of their age. Ageism affects us all – young and old, men and women. Discrimination against older people is particularly harmful as it sends a negative message about self worth, respect and ability. But older people aren’t the only group that experiences ageism, young people can also experience discrimination. Incorrect assumptions and stereotypes act as a barrier between people, so ageism harms not only the individual but our relationships and communities. Greater respect between people of different generations can help us all appreciate the unique contribution that people can make to community life.

Learn more and drop by the information booth at the Confederation Court Mall between 9:00 am and 5:30 pm for treats and an opportunity to win a door prize.

6) Abortion Rights Petition to be Presented in the PEI Legislature

On Tuesday evening June 16th, a petition calling for local access to abortion and abortion care from the Abortion Rights Network (ARN) will be read in the PEI Legislature.  On our Island, this is monumentally significant. The mere mention of abortion by political leaders and a recording in the Hansard gives the option credibility.

While the House is sitting and the petition is being read, there will be a celebration on the lawns of the Coles Building outside (175 Richmond Street). People are encouraged to wear red and to make signs showing their support. There will be pro-choice stickers available, snacks, and some surprises!

There is still time to sign the petition before Becka Viau, petition creator, gathers them up on June 15 (locations: https://www.facebook.com/peistatusofwomen). The petition was created autonomously and has been signed and supported by approximately 1,000 Islanders in just two weeks. All petitions have been signed independently and in person by PEI residents wishing to demonstrate their pro-choice belief in the right to reproductive choice.

The reading in the Legislature and the rally will take place from 6:30-9:00pm, June 16th. Everyone is welcome to come and show their support for Island women. To volunteer email peiabortionrights@gmail.com and to find out more about banner-making and others preparations, see the Facebook event page: https://www.facebook.com/events/1103933446300430/.
