2014-15 Program Year Results

During 2014-15, Reading Results served at 16 schools in three school districts across the Portland Metro area.
  • Portland Public Schools: Bridger School, Bridlemile Elementary, Capitol Hill Elementary, Chapman Elementary, Chief Joseph/Ockley Green School, Faubion School, Harrison Park School, James John Elementary, Rosa Parks Elementary, Sitton Elementary, Vestal School, Whitman Elementary
  • Reynolds School District: Davis Elementary, Glenfair Elementary
  • David Douglas School District: Gilbert Park Elementary, Earl Boyles Elementary (summer)
Thanks to each of these schools for fantastic partnerships!

Reading Results served a record 390 students this year; here are some literacy gain highlights:
  • Students who completed a full program year with us gained an average 1.5  years of reading skills. This means a first-grader who started with us half a year behind was at grade level at the end of the school year.
  • Students gained an average reading fluency of 32 words per minute.
  • Reading Results shows no opportunity gap in reading gains made between students of color and white students, between boys and girls, or between students who speak English at home and students who speak another language at home.

Reading Results is a Recipient of Cycle One Portland Timbers Community Fund

Reading Results is honored to be one of the Cycle One grantees of the Portland Timbers Community Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation. Funds from the Timbers will support our expanding program as we prepare to serve an additional 100 (!) students in the fall. By way of an added bonus, we got to attend a game at the end of May and celebrate on the field - go Timbers!

What Does Successful Third Grade Reading Look Like?

We talk a lot about the importance of third graders being successful readers, but what does that look like? What should they be able to read?

The reading sample below represents the literacy level expected of students at the end of third grade.

Staff Spotlight

Three first-year tutors joined Program Site Manager Shirley on the 2014/15 Reading Results team at Chief Joseph/Ockley Green K-8 School in N Portland (one of our PPS K3 Read Together Partner School Sites).

This great team served 18 students who, on average, gained 32 words in fluency (words read correct per minute) and 1.5 years in overall reading skills. Kudos!

Funder Spotlight

Huge thanks to The Standard, Columbia Bank, and North Highland for supporting the work of Reading Results service and helping us keep pace with the need in our community.

Reading Results Year-End Program Team Celebration

At the end of May, 50 tutors, site managers, staff and board members gathered to celebrate a successful school year. The event culminated with our traditional word-scramble game (there were chocolate prizes involved, serious business.)
