2015 R. Paul Kerston Community Educator Award Announced
Paula Carr is the recipient of the 2015 R. Paul Kerston Award for patient / community educators who have expanded student learning beyond traditional professional boundaries.
Named after long-time community educator, R. Paul Kerston, this annual award was established in 2014 to honour outstanding community educators who have made a difference to student learning at UBC.
Paula Carr, a Community Strategist and Intercultural Neighborhood Developer with Collingwood Neighborhood House, has collaborated with UBC since 2004. She helped produce an award winning film titled, Where Strangers Became Neighbours that has been used in 6 or more UBC courses. Read more...
Toolbox promotes patients as teachers
A paper by UBC researchers Angela Towle and William Godolphin about patients as teachers has been published in the June issue of The Clinical Teacher.
This toolbox article provides practical tips to enhance patient involvement in health professional education.

Health care students needed for project on stigma
Shelley Hourston, Program Director for Disability Alliance BC’s AIDS & Disability Action Program would like to connect with health care students to get their input on a project about HIV/HCV stigma.
Shelley has developed a document called Checklist for Change: HIV & Hepatitis C Stigma in Health Care from interviews with service providers and people living with HIV/HCV. The Checklist is a brief overview of stigma experiences in Canadian health care and provides a checklist of communication strategies that may improve patient experiences.
The next phase of the project is to explore HIV/HCV stigma with health care students. There are a range of ways students can be involved including interviews, focus groups, and private online discussion forum.

Division of Health Care Communication welcomes new coordinator
UBC welcomes Christy Nanos to the Division of Health Care Communication!
"I’m very excited to be working in the Division of Health Care Communication, coordinating meaningful programs that involve the public. I’m enjoying being surrounded by ambitious health care students in an innovative learning environment. I look forward to introducing informed and shared decision making into all aspects of my work." says Christy.
Christy will help coordinate the Interprofessional Health Mentors Program, the Patient & Community Voices Workshop Series, and the Allies in Health Fair.
Christy recently completed a master's degree in Cultural and Creative Studies at King's College London, University of London in the UK.
Over 180 abstracts were received from around the world including, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Norway, Saudi Arabia, Sweden, UK and USA.
Abstracts are being reviewed by the conference committee. Watch for the program to be available later this summer!
