The Wisconsin Wetland Association released a new series of fact sheets during American Wetlands Month. The fact sheets provide basic information about the amount and location of current and former wetlands in each county. They are designed to help communities think about opportunities to protect and restore wetlands to improve watershed health.
Fact sheets are currently only available for 33 counties. Fact sheets for additional counties will be released following upcoming updates to WDNR’s wetland data sets. The maps and tables within each fact sheet were generated using potentially restorable wetlands data provided by the Wisconsin DNR Bureau of Water Quality with assistance from students enrolled in a Client-Based Conservation graduate seminar at UW-Madison.
County planning and zoning staff may find this information helpful in updates to planning documents, and for reviewing project proposals with potential wetland impacts. All available, and upcoming, fact sheets can be found here: http://www.wisconsinwetlands.org/countyfactsheets.htm
Disclaimer: The maps and tables included in the fact sheets were derived using best available data. Click here for a brief description of the limitations of currently available wetlands data.
Questions about the development, distribution, or content of these fact sheets should be directed to our Policy Director, Erin O’Brien at policy@wisconsinwetlands.org or 608-250-9971.
