President's Message

Summer has arrived here in Waushara County.  I don’t know about you, but our permit numbers are up significantly from the last few years.  I doubt we will get back to the peak numbers  we had previously for quite a while yet, but it appears that our building is bouncing back and everyone is back to being busy this year.  And that is good news for all of us.  Including the county and state budget watchers, if the growth continues. Speaking of budgets, most of the legislative action that has taken place so far this year has been in and around the state’s biennial budget.

WCCA formed a coalition with the Wisconsin Realtors Association,  Wisconsin Builders Association, Wisconsin Counties Association, Wisconsin Liquid Waste Carriers, Wisconsin Onsite Water Recycling Association, Wisconsin Plumbing and Heating Contractors, Wisconsin Towns Association, and Wisconsin Precast Association to address two items in the Governor’s Budget.  Those were the transfer of the POWTs program from DSPS to DNR, and the elimination of Wisconsin Fund dollars. At this time, I am happy to report that the transfer of the POWTs program is no longer in the budget, and that Wisconsin Fund dollars have been partially restored for this biennium.  Although WCCA was not particularly opposed to the transfer of the POWTs program to DNR, we agreed to back the others in their opposition to that portion of the budget, in order (Click for more)
Thank You to WCCA Membership
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the WCCA membership for selecting me as a recipient of the William Hnilicka Memorial Scholarship.  At the May 31, 2015 Saint Thomas Aquinas Academy Graduation Ceremony in Marinette I was presented the William Hnilicka Scholarship.  It was nice to be recognized in front of my peers and all those in attendance.  It was also great to have the school recognize Mr. William Hnilicka and the WCCA for supporting high school graduates seeking higher education in the field of Natural Resources.  In the late 1980’s my father attended a soils class at NWTC in Green Bay in preparation for his soils tester exam and Mr. Hnilicka was the instructor.  Mr. Hnilicka taught my father some 25 years ago and today I’m blessed with being awarded a scholarship in his name that will help fund my college education.  Again thanks to the membership for the all they do to preserve our natural recourses and for taking the time to go above and beyond by providing scholarship opportunities for high school graduates.

Beaver Overthinking Dam

HUNTSVILLE, ONTARIO—Local beaver Dennis Messner is spending an inordinate amount of time and effort in the planning and construction phases of building his dam, according to neighbors close to the project.

In the past four months, Messner, 4, has visited hundreds of other dams and drawn up detailed and extensive blueprints. He has researched topics ranging from advanced dome acoustics to the near-extinction of the North American beaver in the early 20th century, and plans to incorporate much of his research into his design. The Wisconsin Wetland Association released a new series of fact sheets during American Wetlands Month.  The fact sheets provide basic information about the amount and location of current and former wetlands in each county. They are designed to help communities think about opportunities to protect and restore wetlands to improve watershed health. 

Fact sheets are currently only available for 33 counties.  Fact sheets for additional counties will be released following upcoming updates to WDNR’s wetland data sets. The maps and tables within each fact sheet were generated using potentially restorable wetlands data provided by the Wisconsin DNR Bureau of Water Quality with assistance from students enrolled in a Client-Based Conservation graduate seminar at UW-Madison. 

County planning and zoning staff may find this information helpful in updates to planning documents, and for reviewing project proposals with potential wetland impacts.  All available, and upcoming, fact sheets can be found here: http://www.wisconsinwetlands.org/countyfactsheets.htm
