Moving Towards the Clinic:

Interoperative Visualization to Optimize Tumor Resections
Mekhail Anwar, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor and Catherine Park, MD, in the department of Radiation Oncology were repeat Catalyst awardees in the Fall of 2012 and Spring 2014 cycles, with a project to develop an imager for real-time intraoperative visualization of tumor margins during resection procedures.  In its first Catalyst cycle, the advisors encouraged the team to consider the clinical applications in which such device would have the most impact on patient outcomes and to define target device specifications.  Catalyst funding enabled the team to validate new approaches to take a bulky benchtop device to a microfabricated concept and to build collaborations with the Dept of Radiology at UCSF and with Electrical Engineering UC Berkeley, and to secure significant grants from the Department of Defense and Mary Kay Foundation to move the device into the clinical setting.  The team is currently characterizing the performance of the device components on models of breast and prostate cancer.
