World Oceans Day
World Oceans Day
June 8th is World Oceans Day, a date designated by the United Nations to recognize our relationship with the ocean. Around the world this week there are maritime festivals, beach clean-ups, school projects, and environmental presentations. It is an international event that focuses interest on the ocean and its benefits for all mankind. We hope you did something significant for the ocean this week in honor of World Oceans Day. The ocean will serve us well forever if we demand now to serve it better, and if we live with the thought that every day is Ocean Day.

Like Now and For Future Generations.
So, What's Next?

The Next System Project
What is required to deal with the systemic challenges facing us now and in coming decades? The Next System Project is debating this concept and more, putting the central idea of system change, and the idea that there can be a “next system,” on the map. Working with a broad group of researchers, theorists and activists, they are launching a national debate on the nature of “the next system" to refine and publicize alternative models to the failed systems of the past. Their goal? To move the political conversation beyond current limits with the aim of visualizing a radically different system for the future.

"We are a planet crying out for water, and we don’t seem to hear the call. We are seven billion persons on earth, increasing every day, demanding water as a right, even as the supply is poisoned, wasted, and withdrawn from the global value calculation. That’s not virtual; that’s real. We are what we drink, and without water, we are nothing." ~ From World Ocean Radio: Virtual Water
World Ocean Radio: Trans-Pacific Partnership TPP
Trans-Pacific Partnership and the Ocean
About this episode: The 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership has been causing conflict of late, with a broad range of disagreements over key provisions and debates intensifying due to lack of information available to the public. In this episode of World Ocean Radio we discuss climate and environment as it relates to the agreement, and will cite from a draft analysis on environmental issues recently published in the New York Law Journal by Stephen L. Kass which provides interesting insight into the prospective terms of the proposed agreement. #WorldOceanRadio

A Danger of Dams
A Danger of Dams
About this episode: The Rasuwaghadi Dam project in Nepal, severely damaged by the recent earthquake, is mired in controversy. One of many mega-projects along the Tishuli River, it is simultaneously over-engineered due to future inadequate supply of water from decreased glacial melt, and under-engineered due to risk factors such as earthquakes. In this episode of World Ocean Radio we cite from a recent report from New Yorker Magazine author Isabel Hunter who revealed sobering facts about the Rasuwaghadi Dam and its ilk: projects fueled by central governments, unlimited finance, cheap labor, environmental disregard, social dislocation, and cultural destruction. #WorldOceanRadio
World Ocean Radio: California Dreamed
California Dreamed
About this episode: Because of persistent drought and water crises due to unsustainable practices, California is facing many challenges to its very existence. It is water that built California and opened the West to expansion; and it is water now that poses the single-most challenging aspect of its future. In this episode of World Ocean Radio we will share headlines of the last few weeks related to the water crisis, and will suggest that to find a solution we must look to an entirely new value proposition built around the rightful use and distribution of water. #WorldOceanRadio

World Ocean Radio: Virtual Water

Virtual Water
About this episode: "Virtual water" is the water we incorporate into our lives each day that is not listed on labels or calculated into price. When you begin to add it all up, the statistics are dizzying. We are in an age of increased demand and diminishing supply, even while energy extraction methods such as hydrofracking consume, remove, and contaminate billions of gallons of fresh water each year. In this episode of World Ocean Radio we provide numerous examples of ways in which water consumption and use go unseen in our daily lives. #WorldOceanRadio
