Dear Friends:

Racism can be defeated!  Racism is founded in ignorance and fear and is the basest of human behavior.  I wish at this dark moment in our country’s history people could have a peek at Smalls Jazz Club.  The world watches our live shows through the broadcasts of our webcams but I wish they could see what happens behind those cameras.  If they could, they would see a room full of people, all kinds of people, joyfully abiding together in the mutual love of this music.  They would see musicians of all races, Black, White, Japanese, European, Israeli, greeting each other like family night after night.  They would see hugs and joyful embraces and deep real laughter.  They would see musical brothers and sisters delighted in each other’s presence.  The family of jazz musicians knows no racial boundaries - just the boundaries of their own talents as recognized by their peers.  Jazz has always been this way.  Jazz musicians have always been at the forefront of integration since the beginnings of this music more than one hundred years ago.
 
Jazz music is the great gift of the African American culture to the world.  It is the sublime combination of soul and intellect and the highest achievement of Man.  Jazz Music speaks universally.  Love, pain, romance, sex, despair and adulation are the expressions of the Human Soul.  The African American culture gave this humanity musical expression and now it’s all of our treasure.  Race is something that you are born to but Culture can be assimilated.  Like the truthful words of Buddha and Christ and Mohammed, Jazz is for all Mankind – for those that are ready to receive it.  The spirit of Jazz is Universal.
 
I've been surprised to see Mezz Mezzrow making it into the news cycle thanks to the issue arising from Rachel Dolezal.  Normally, Mezz Mezzrow is never mentioned ever, even by jazz musicians.  I will not make any comment in regards to Mrs. Dolezal or take a position publically, however, I will say something about Mezz Mezzrow.  In articles such as this one in the New York Times (CLICK) or this one in the Forward (CLICK), Mezz Mezzrow is being portrayed as a white man passing himself off as Black - as a charlatan.  But this isn’t accurate and misses the most important point about Mezzrow.  Mezz Mezzrow was a Jewish Russian immigrant who lived in Chicago in the 1920’s.  Early in his life he was faced with choosing between the harsh, racist mid-western whites or the African American people, but Mezz Mezzrow was a musician first and foremost.  His love was jazz music and the musicians who played it.  His friends were Louis Armstrong and Sidney Bechet, who shared with him the life of joy that came from this music.  He identified with the music with the full force of his soul.  He rejected the ugliness of racial hatred and embraced what spoke to him the most - jazz and the culture of the people who created it.  All of these articles fail to mention or recognize the powerful spirit of Jazz.  Mezzrow was not an “imposter” and not trying to fool anyone.  But he felt most comfortable among African American people and their culture and lived his life making it his own.  He married an African American woman and made his home in Harlem where he lived out his days.  If you haven’t read it yet, I highly recommend his autobiography “Really The Blues”, which is one of the great pieces of jazz literature and a testament to the Brotherhood of Jazz Musicians and the possibility of true racial unity – inspired by music, mutual respect and love.
 
Murder, hatred and ignorance will unfortunately always be factors in human history.  As we evolve as spiritual beings we must resist this ugliness.  By embracing the universality of love, respect and peaceful co-abiding we can overcome this evil.  Jazz music will always represent the very best of the Human Spirit.  I pray for peace and music in the world.  It is our only hope.
