Dear Parents and Caregivers
Peter Ackers
As I write this article, exam week has just begun and the students have been studying to prepare for these exams. Assessment is a critical part of the educational process, students need feedback in a high stakes environment and parents need that feedback and reassurance that everything is on track. For our Year 13’s this will be the 18th exam session at Huanui including external exams and for our Year 7’s their first exam session. Exams can be very stressful, but I feel are still a fair and robust measure in many instances of how much learning has occurred. My advice to the Year 7’s is to do your very best and learn from the experience.

A parent survey was recently completed by many parents in the school community. The feedback both positive and negative is appreciated and will influence the direction the school takes in the future. There will be a draft 5 year plan released before the end of the year and parents will have another opportunity to comment of the direction the school takes over the next 5 years. [View summary of parent survey responses...] (120Kb PDF)

I know that some of our students will gain outstanding results in these exams and we will celebrate the success of these students as we celebrate all our students' successes. Excellence should be celebrated, but it is personal excellence that Huanui College is all about. This comes from our school motto “Vincit qui se vincit- He conquers who conquers himself”. So excellence will be celebrated but personal excellence will be just as rewarding and will always be the result of hard work. Hopefully with good work ethic and high expectations, our students will constantly redefine what their level of personal excellence is during their time at Huanui College.

After the exams teachers will be busy writing reports and these will be issued on the last day of the term.  Parent – Teacher interviews are scheduled for the first week of Term 3.

A big thank you for all the parents, caregivers and students who were at the College the other Sunday for our first working bee.  Your efforts have already made a difference to the appearance of the surrounds of the school. Special mention must be made of Stuart Jackson for his planning and organisation of the day, Geordie Forbes from Cervus Equipment for organising the loader and Bryce Manderson from Avoca for providing the metal.

I know that parents that attended the study skills presentation put on by the College and the Attitude presentations were very informative and often reassuring that you are not alone. Many parents were not able to attend these presentations and we have had the opportunity to secure a presentation by John Horrell of the Knowledge Shop in Wellington. John has made many presentations to schools around New Zealand and is based on research on how a young person brain works and how that relates to studying.

Quote of the Week:
Satisfaction lies in the effort, not in the attainment, full effort is full victory” - Mahatma Gandhi

Parents / Caregivers and students all welcome

John Horrell (based in Wellington) is founder of Knowledge Shop NZ.

Study Skills and the Teenage Brain
In this talk I look at five characteristics of the teenage brain and the implications on learning. For each of the five characteristics, I briefly discuss the theory and then focus on lots of practical advice.

The Reluctant Learner
A useful look at these students who see no purpose in learning/studying, which again provides a lot of practical advice for students to turn things around.

Year 10 Art Workshop

The Year 10 IGCSE Art classes have recently completed a 6 hour workshop with contemporary practising artists, Greg Barron and Jing Ling, at the Glenbervie Pottery Gallery.  Prior to the visit the students studied African Mask characteristics and history and were asked to come up with compositions for their own stylised masks.
The work they have completed will be marked as part of their Cambridge IGCSE Art Coursework assessment.  The students had a wonderful time and enjoyed the sessions immensely. We would to thank Greg and Jing Ling and if you have not had the opportunity to visit the gallery next door to the school, the students highly recommend it. [Read article...]

Calling for "Speed Career Information Specialists"!

I would like to organise an afternoon session to allow our students to find out about the many jobs/careers in which our parents and caregivers are involved. I am envisioning a format where a group of 5 students sit around a table with a parent for five minutes while the parent talks about their career - academic qualifications, personal skills and attributes, career pathways, future opportunities etc. The group of students will then move to the next parent, so that a number of careers can be covered in short period of time.

If you would like to volunteer to be a specialist or need some additional information please contact Vernice Young (Assistant Principal). The event will take place on Thursday 2nd July 2015 at 1:30pm. Your help will be appreciated.

English Tutorials – Term Two

Take 2 Band Qualifies at Smokefree Rockquest

The Take 2 band qualified for The Smokefree Rockquest Reginals on the 20th of June. The band scored highly on presentation, musicianship and professionalism. The competition was of a higher standard this year.

Prior to Rockquest Take 2 were invited as guests to a Tauraroa Area School concert on the 22nd of May which was a good chance for pre performance warm up. The 2 bands from Tauraroa Area school opened the show then Take 2 were the Finale. Band members are Mana Harding, Katene Cotton, Adam Roycroft, Tatiana Peita, Harriette Baxter, Merlia De Ridder and Shana Gordon. Take 2 would like to thank everyone that supported them at Rockquest.

Inscription Band Competes at Smokefree Rockquest

Huanui College’s band Inscription performed at Smokefree Rockquest on the 23rd of May to a full house at Forum North. It was their first public performance, and an amazing effort given that the first time they played the song together was just two weeks prior to Rockquest. The judges had some great things to say about the band and the audience responded enthusiastically.

The requirement for entry to Smokefree Rockquest is that all performances are original songs, with band vocalist Eila Koller writing the lyrics for their song, described by the judges in their assessment as ‘powerful’. Their timing was excellent with a very tight performance by the whole band. This new band has given us a taste of what they can do in just a couple of weeks of dedicated practice, and we look forward to seeing more from them. Band members are Eila Koller (vocals / guitar), Lorenzo Ear (guitar), Ben Lee-Johnson (keyboards), Luka Radford-Park (bass guitar), Harry Lewin (drums). The group had a great time, and rounded the day off with a game of 10 pin bowling.

Hillary Outdoor Pursuits Centre Trip Fundraising

The year 10 students are off to the annual OPC trip at Hillary Outdoor Pursuits Centre Tongariro, and are fundraising for the trip. In addition to sausage sizzles in the community, this year we want to have a fundraiser auction. We’d like to invite families from the Huanui College community to become fundraising sponsors by donating a product or service (could be pretty much anything) from a local business, it could be your own business or a business you work for. In return we will offer support to the sponsoring business by way of advertising on the Huanui College website for a fixed period to be agreed, including a link to the sponsoring business website. Check out who has sponsored auction items so far.

We’re also looking at having an OPC fundraising garage sale, so if you have any used items you’d be willing to donate we’d love to hear from you too.

Young Mariners - Girls Adventure Group

The 8 – 19 year old girls at YM go sailing, canoeing, rowing, camping, rock climbing, swimming, shooting. They also learn rigging, knots, and badgework.

We train the girls to canoe, row and sail for our national competition with the other 8 groups around the north island. We are based on Sea Scout activities so in winter we train in bushcraft and hold camps in forests. We have trained Search and Rescue people to take activities in tramping, compass work and topographical maps and making bivouacs. During summer we train in swimming, rigging, canoeing, sailing and rowing. Safety if our first priority and our safety boat drivers are trained in taking the utmost care of girls in the water if capsized.

We have been very successful at our last regatta which we hosted with 292 people attending, at Whangaruru Beachfront camp. We have a group of 18 girls at the moment and would like to invite girls to join during the winter months so that they are partially trained for the summer on-water events.

YM meets on Mondays at Riverside Drive before the BMX Track.
Seniors 6pm to 8pm, Juniors (8 to 11 years) 6pm to 7:30pm.
