This Sunday at WUU: June 14, 2015

10:00 am
Rev. Jennifer Ryu
"A Pagan, a Buddhist, and a Liberal Christian Walk Into a Church..."

That church would most likely be a Unitarian Universalist congregation. As our nation continues to grow more ethnically diverse, it is also becoming more religiously diverse.

Even though fewer people are joining traditional Christian churches, many still seek spiritual communities in order to experience personal transformation and to engage in meaningful service to the greater good.

Stewardship News

THE ANNUAL CANVASS CONCLUDES
At Sunday’s Congregational meeting, I reported the following results:
As of last week, WUU has received annual canvass pledges of $306,490 from 174 families, representing about 93% of our goal of $331,000. At the same point last year, 180 households had pledged $315,746.

Ultimately we raised $327,726 in pledges for the current year from 191 households, so I am cautiously predicting that this year’s canvass will raise at least $315,000. That still leaves the Board and the Finance Committee with some significant decisions to make, so your gifts do make a difference and will continue to be welcome for the budget year beginning next month. We are still waiting to hear from about 22 households who have not yet responded.

WORKSHOP ON MONEY THIS SUNDAY
Martha Elim, Trenna Tankersley and Nancy Carnegie will facilitate a workshop this Sunday on our relationship with money and how it connects us to the world around us. Through your participation, you can learn about the role of money as a class barrier and as a tool of social justice when we get together in the Sanctuary after the Sunday service. The workshop is free to attend and lunch will be provided to those who have registered in advance. Prior attendance at February’s workshop is not required. Childcare available with advance registration.  Please register in advance here .

QUESTIONS?
Please ask a Stewardship Committee member or either Ellyn Stephens or Suzanne Huddleston in the WUU Office.

Building Our Future 2016

CHALICE LIGHTERS CHECK PRESENTED TO WUU!
A check for $21,400 was presented to WUU by the Southeast District Chalice Lighters to support the Building Our Future program.  Wayne Moyer, WUU Chalice Lighters Coordinator, accepted the check during the service last Sunday (June 7) from Anita Lee, a member of First UU of Richmond and a member of the Chalice Lighters selection committee.

The Chalice Lighter program accepted WUU’s application last summer for a grant to enable the Building Our Future team to prepare for the Capital Campaign and to fund preliminary site survey work last year.  Their call to the Chalice Lighters throughout the District resulted in this generous grant. Grants are awarded for both traditional and innovative growth projects, such as calling a minister, hiring professional staff; buying a building or land; leasing a building or land; constructing a new building or renovating an existing one.

No more than three times each year, a Chalice Lighter call describing the approved grant request is sent out to those who have pledged to support the program. By pooling contributions of $15 or more from the Chalice Lighters, substantial grants can be provided to congregations which are expanding their ministries. If you would like to join more than 60 of our members to become our newest Chalice Lighter, see Wayne Moyer or any Board member.

“Your Money and Your Life: Wi$dom Path Workshop 2”

Sunday, June 14, sanctuary, 11:30-1:30 (light lunch included)
Auntie Mame once said money is like fertilizer: it doesn't help things grow till you spread it around. If money can help things grow, it can contribute to life—and to our spiritual quest. Please join us for the second workshop exploring money from a spiritual perspective. How does money affect our relationships with others? With ourselves? In our congregation and our local community? And even with people abroad? No need to have taken the first workshop to participate fully in the second. Sponsored by the Stewardship Committee. Childcare available with advance registration.  Please register here.

Help Needed With Photo Collection
This is an at-home-on-your-schedule-no-rush job.  Thanks to Dave Scherer and many other unknown WUUers, we have several hundred photos taken since our beginning.  They need to be "albumized" so that members and friends killing time in the lounge area of our future narthex can enjoy, remember, learn, and help ID.  Funds have been made available for appropriate albums.  Contact me, Dave Warren (WUU historian), at warrendr@cox.net or 757 223-3853.
