Loving to Learn

“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new lands, but in seeing with new eyes." - Marcel Proust

Red Deer, AB. June 3, 2015: In a busy world it can be difficult to find the time to learn new things and develop new skills, but learning makes life exciting and helps us become more interesting people. So important is the concept of lifelong learning that UNESCO has made the development of lifelong learners one of its desired outcomes worldwide: “An individual will not be able to meet life challenges unless he or she becomes a lifelong learner, and societies will not be sustainable unless they become learning societies.”

You don’t have to travel to become a lifelong learner, but travel is always an education in itself. Those who travel to Red Deer will discover unique opportunities to learn new things, expand their horizons and broaden their skill set.

Red Deer College Summer Learning Programs
Spend some time at Red Deer College this summer and ignite a new passion. RDC has developed an amazing summer arts school where adults can learn everything from sculpture and painting to stained glass and fibre arts. There are also plenty of cool summer day camps and stay camps for children and teens covering such areas as music, sports, visual art, dance, science, film, video game design and trades.

Birds, Flowers, and Nature Speakers
If you want to learn about the birds, natural flora and the world around you, the Red Deer River Naturalists have several free programs that may interest you. A monthly speaker series brings in scientists and naturalists to discuss different aspects of the natural world. Every Sunday afternoon, birders get together for a bird walk in the Red Deer region. It’s a great way for novice birders to learn about this exciting hobby and an opportunity for experienced birders to enjoy birding with others who are passionate about it. From January to April and September through November, the group also holds flower focus groups and walks.

Fun Summer Learning – Nature rafting, Star Parties and more
The Kerry Wood Nature Centre has great summer programing for both kids and adults. Take an interpretive rafting trip down the Red Deer River, attend a meteor shower star party, build a solar oven, learn to cook on a campfire or spend the night with your family at Fort Normandeau.

Circus School
Help your kids run away to the circus this summer. Red Deer’s annual street performer festival, Centrefest, features a full weekend of free family fun including Circus School. Kids can learn juggling, tight rope walking and other great skills that will help them in their future careers as Cirque du Soleil performers.

Ellis Bird Farm Summer Classes
The tea house at Ellis Bird Farm will be featuring several workshops this season where visitors can learn charcuterie secrets, how to make a homemade cider press, pie making and pickling basics. Be sure to check out the brand new visitor’s centre while you’re there.
