JUNE 2015 NEWSLETTER
Hot Jazz & Tree Walk this Weekend!

It will be a busy weekend in Glen Providence Park - starting tomorrow at 4:30 with the first in our 2015 Summer Concert Series! Travel back in time to the “Roaring 20’s” of flappers, gangsters, and Model A’s with the Blackbird Society Orchestra. Hear the sounds of the “music people forgot about” including Eddie Lang, Bix Beiderbecke, Armstrong, Ellington, and many more! We are grateful to sponsors Seven Stones Cafe, Media Rotary, and Media Recreation for making this free concert possible. Bring a blanket or chair, and relax on the lawn by the stage to enjoy a late afternoon concert! If the weather is questionable, we will post on Facebook and on our website by noon Saturday whether we will use our Sunday rain date - see our website for more details and logistics.

On Sunday afternoon, join us at 1:00 for a tree walk led by Dr. David Hewitt! We’ll walk part of the trail from the 1941 Nature Guide and compare the park’s current trees to those described in the guide, including a “nature oddity” that is still there! It is an opportune time to be able to ask tree i.d. questions, as we recently got underway with tree mapping, our 2015 Citizen Science Project! You can learn about tree mapping and see photos from our fun first day, which brought our park tree list up to 49 species!

We continue to work on past years' Citizen Science projects tracking birds, reptiles and amphibians in the park... in May a birder added Acadian Flycatcher, Hooded Warbler, and Canada Warbler to eBird, bringing our Park Bird List to 116! Not surprisingly, we were able to confirm Northern Spring Peepers in the park, bringing our Reptile & Amphibian List up to 18 species. We held two volunteer events this spring - you can read an account and see photos of our spring cleaning, and our Invasives Removal volunteers work most Fridays to liberate native plants, and help keep the trails clear!

It's part of a long tradition of volunteerism in Glen Providence Park, in which the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts have played no small part! In Scouts in the Park, we wrote about their involvement in the park back to the 1930's, including picnics, cookouts, meetings, and ceremonies, and some significant volunteer projects - like the bird blind that stood for several years near the Kirk Lane entrance. We just met with a 6th grade Girl Scout Troop last month to discuss ideas for their Silver Award projects. In honor of all that the Scouts have done in the park through the years, on our September 2011 annotated trail map, we nicknamed the park trail along Kirk Lane the Scouts Loop!

Upcoming events are listed below - keep up with us on our website and Facebook!
