Antibiotic Awareness Campaign Feedback

In November 2014 the Scottish Antimicrobial Prescribing Group (SAPG) in collaboration with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society in Scotland, Community Pharmacy Scotland and Pharmacy Voice distributed a European Antibiotic Awareness Day resource pack to all community pharmacies in Scotland.  A key element within the pack was a tear off pad of patient self care leaflets, adapted from an RCGP leaflet, to help patients manage symptoms of self-limiting respiratory infections.  The leaflet can be used by pharmacists as a personalized handheld record to document the advice and pharmacy medicine recommended, and as a referral tool for patients about whom they have concerns.

As part of ongoing national work to reduce unnecessary use of antibiotics SAPG is keen to hear from community pharmacists about their experience of using the leaflet and also any ideas for how community pharmacy can further support future antibiotic awareness campaigns.

Please complete the survey by 30th June.

Temazepam Changes

From 1st June, temazepam is no longer exempt from the CD prescription writing requirements.  In summary, valid prescriptions must contain the dose, form, strength, and total quantity in words and figures.  Medicines, Ethics and Practice, published annually by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society provides more detailed guidance on these requirements.

PHS Poster Campaign

The Public Health Service poster displayed in pharmacies from 18th May - 28th June has been changed from diabetes to second hand smoke.  There is no action required from contractors.

Electronic claiming of prescriptions

We are seeing an increasing number of discrepancies between the electronically claimed information and that endorsed on paper forms.

We are working to produce a guide to support contractors, however, in the meantime please remember Practitioner Services will pay wherever it is available from electronic information. Recent examples of errors include where:
  • Electronic message differs from endorsements on paper
  • Electronic dispensed item is linked to wrong prescribed item (where items added manually in the wrong order)
  • Out of pocket or price endorsements on paper but missing from electronic claim
  • Out of pocket or price endorsements not made in pence
  • Hand amended prescriptions without electronic PC or PMR endorsement
Where electronic information is available and these endorsements are not applied, Practitioner Services will pay applying the business rules to the electronic claim and will not re-price prescriptions by looking at the paper.

For further information, please call Pharmacy services on 0131 466 3540.

Prescribing of Quinine Sulphate on CPUS

We are seeing a large number of CPUS prescriptions for quinie sulphate being rejected as this item is excluded from use under the unscheduled care PGD.

There is a step by step guide which shows appropriate action to take where a patient is ineligible for supply under the PGD.

A link to the full PGD and supporting documents can be found on the NHS Community Pharmacy website.’
