June 28th Program Cancelled
Unfortunately, we need to cancel the scheduled program on Nature Journals/Sketchbooks this month. But Green Community Connections is having a Sustainability Community Potluck on June 28th (more below).
We are looking forward to the upcoming programs:
- July 19, 2:30-4:30 PM: Judy Pollock on Native Plantings to Attract Migratory Birds
- August 16, 2:30-4:30 PM: Kathleen Garness on Small Changes with Big Impacts: How Gardeners Can Help Native Plants and Animals
- September 13, 2:30-4:30 PM: Patrick Leacock on Mushrooms of the Chicago Region
Pollinator Week
Last week was pollinator week, and many of us took time to appreciate our pollinators. From the tiniest of hover flies and sweat bees to our large Carpenter bees to butterflies, beetles, pollinators come in a variety of shapes, biologies, and beauty. Whole Foods ran a series of short videos honoring the rich diversity we have in pollinators and mentions ways we can ensure healthy populations. To take action as individuals and as a community, we can plant native plants and use ecologically sensitive yard clean-up practices to ensure the survival of our pollinators. National Wild Ones has a page devoted to much of the recent news around pollinators, including President Obama's national strategy to improve the health of all pollinators: National Pollinator Week

Green Community Connections Summer Potluck
Green Community Connections will host a summer potluck. We will enjoy a pot luck picnic supper (hopefully outdoors) and share what's going on: victories, challenges, resources, upcoming events and opportunities.

This Nessus Sphinx moth was found emerging from the soil; these moths pupate in an underground chamber, and luckily it chose a pesticide-free lawn to use.
