Residents' Update:
Sunday 21st June 2015

Dear All,

As we reach the longest day of the year it’s time for another update.
This week we include: Whitley Bridge - New footpath from 22nd June; Residents' Parking Schemes – Updates; Whitley Bridge Works; Costcutter apply for Alcohol licence; Tea Dance 24th June; Daventry Road/London Road Junction; Whitley Abbey Primary School Open Evening; Participatory Budgeting; Community Activity Directory; Turtles at Quinton Pools?; Coventry Transport Museum’s Relaunch; Dates for your Diary. And Finally…

Whitley Bridge - New footpath route from 4am on Monday 22nd June
Above is a plan of the new footpath route. This footpath route will be effective from 04:00hrs Monday 22.6.15.

The route will take pedestrians onto the south side of the new bridge and will require them to cross over the new southbound slip road which will be live . There will be pedestrian controlled crossing facilities at this location. Please note that this is a temporary measure until the scheme is completed. At that point pedestrian/cyclists will utilise the existing bridge which will be designated as a non-motorised user route. The temporary crossing facilities will then be withdrawn.

Residents' Parking Schemes - Updates
Residents in the Cheylesmore area have now received letters from the City Council giving details on how to register and apply for their parking permits. Permits cost £20 per vehicle and will last for three years. It’s imperative that permits are applied for before the proposed start date of 15th July 2015.

Roads included in the ‘Cheylesmore West’ scheme are: Asthill Grove, Asthill Croft, Orchard Crescent, Michaelmas Road, Stoney Road and Humphrey Burtons’ Road. Added as a result of the residents petitions presented by Roger to the Council are: The Hiron, Townsend Road, Townsend Croft and Hiron Croft.

Roads in the ‘Cheylesmore East’ which were only included in the scheme as a result of residents' petitions presented by Roger: Thomas Landsdail Street, Wrigsham Street, Hockett Street, Joan Ward Street, top section of Silksby Street, The Martyrs’ Close, Quinton Road, Franciscan Road and Carthusian Road.

Whitley Bridge Works Update
The new slip road out of JLR/business park/hotel/gym opened this week, enabling traffic to exit by turning directly left onto the A444 (Cheylesmore bypass). The northbound route out of JLR etc. has closed. Motorists from the Whitley Business Park wishing to travel to London Road Island have to turn at the Festival island and return northwards on the A444. Motorists travelling to Warwick etc. merge onto the southbound A444 without using the Whitley Island.

The Council has appointed a new project manager (Ian Lewis) who has sent us this update on the Whitley Bridge works and confirms that the speed limit of 20mph in Leaf Lane will remain until the end of the works.

The dates I have obtained from last week’s site progress meeting with the contractor are as follows;

Completion 5th August 2015
Leaf Lane Opening 28 July 2015
South slip road 17 June 2015 (completed)
North slip road 27 June 2015

I do however suspect that the completion dates may be pushed back by a week following my review of the level of works left to complete. My background is in ‘buildability’ and project completion and I am reviewing daily the planned activities and areas of work. There has been an uplift in the amount of works that have been undertaken in the last fortnight and should the weather hold out for the next week then we should be on target.

There has been a change to the dates of completion and whilst I have not been party to all the historical information I am trying to firm up the proposed dates. A review meeting takes place every 2 weeks and from this I intend to update various parties of the dates. You are more than welcome to contact me to seek an update.

The 20mph temporary speed limit will be in force until the project completion and I am satisfied that the existing road, verge, signs etc have been returned to a suitable level of reinstatement.

Costcutter apply for Alcohol licence
Costcutter, 50 Daventry Road, has applied to sell alcohol from 6am until midnight seven days a week. Date of last objection is 6th July.

Daventry Road / London Road traffic lights
Residents continue to ask us why this junction can’t be opened up for traffic to turn right. We have asked the Council if the junction at Daventry Road / London Road could be opened up while the Bridge works was taking place. The Council said that they would monitor the works, but it was unlikely they would open it up as the London Road is a main arterial route into the City and they would want to minimise any traffic holdups, such as traffic lights, along this road. Please see reply from Ian, the new project manager of the Whitley Bridge works.

With respect to the traffic using the bus gate from Daventry Road onto London Road a colleague has been reviewing the traffic movements and is looking at adding further detection measures to the signals to ensure that it works more efficiently. The fall-back position would be to place a bus enforcement camera at this location, however this needs a power supply which is not a quick measure to implement.

Whitley Abbey Primary School Open Evening for Residents
Residents in the Whitley area will have seen the building work taking place to extend the Whitley Primary School. The school has doubled in size with extra class rooms, library and sports hall. Turtles at Quinton Pools?
A resident has reported to us seeing a turtle at Quinton Pools. Apparently other residents have seen it and there may be more than one. Hazel asked the park ranger if they are likely to cause any harm to the fish or other wildlife at Quinton Pools. See below her reply.

Dear Hazel,
We are aware of the terrapin at Quinton, we also have at least two in our local stretch of the Coventry canal (although these would be the responsibility of the Canals and Rivers Trust). People buy them as tiny cute pets and then release them into the wild when they realise how big they can get and how expensive it is to run an aquarium to keep them in.
We are keeping an eye on them.
They are predators and will eat small fish, amphibians and even ducklings occasionally, depending on how big the terrapin is and the availability of food.
One option is to catch them, this means they then have to be adopted by someone as a pet or put to sleep humanely by a vet at our expense. It is very difficult to get them adopted and to catch them requires specialist equipment and can take some time.
At the moment the terrapin at Quinton is not posing a significant threat due to its size, but we will continue to monitor the pool and the terrapin’s growth.
If you have any further queries please do not hesitate to contact me.
Kind regards,

Michelle A Tyrtania
Ranger Development Manager

Coventry Transport Museum’s Relaunch.

Twelve of the fourteen galleries have been transformed and new technology has been  introduced to liven up the Blitz Experience.

The Museum aims to educate visitors about the City's transport history in a more dynamic way, including better understanding Coventry's status as the bicycle capital of the World during the 19th Century.
