The Reverse Evolution of Microsoft

You have no doubt heard me speak of “Body by Bill Gates” or “Body by Microsoft” as a quip at the main cause of so much of our neck, shoulder, and upper back pain.

Well, recently I got a lot of links to articles, showing that thoracic spinal manipulation dramatically improved neck, shoulder and arm pain; which made me think . . . If treating the kyphotic nature of our thoracic spine, does in fact, improve neck-shoulder-arm pain, does it need to be a thrust / manipulation intervention or would a non-thrust Muscle Energy Technique work just as well? Hmmm . . .

Q:  I have been working with a patient who has had R sided LBP with occasional radicular symptoms down her R lateral leg and weakness with active hip flexion on the R.  When performing the hypomobility testing for iliosacral dysfunction, she demonstrates significant hypomobility on the R side.  She presented with a shorter R leg, a depressed pubic bone, upslip, and anterior rotation.  I treated for a depressed pube first, then the upslip, and following this, everything else levelled out.  When I tested again for iliosacral mobility, it remained unchanged, so then performed the lligament recoil technique.  It seemed like even though she was level and symmetrical, her mobility remained unchanged even after the ligament recoil, and she still had difficulty with R active hip flexion.  Am I missing something?
Angela, PTA

A:  Angela, First let me say how impressed I am with your sequencing and attention to detail.  I would try to be more vigorous with the recoil. It's difficult for me to tell as I am not there to view things.  Did you clear the long resistors of the hip? A tight ham or hip flexor could cause these issues as could some of the other muscles that attach to the hip.

Biological Basis May Help Explain Link Between Anxiety, Chronic Pain

Pain_LevelA study presented at the Ninth Annual Canadian Neuroscience Meeting suggests that a biological basis for the link between anxiety and chronic pain may have been found.

Min Zhuo, PhD, the study’s presenter, and his team note also that a molecule that may help reduce chronic pain-related anxiety may have been identified.
Chronic pain can be viewed as a learned memory, and persistent pain can become chronic because neurons can become more efficient at transmitting pain signals.

Our Seminars

Thomas K. Ockler, PT
Muscle Energy Technique is one of the most effective and valuable manual techniques for the identification and correction of somatic asymmetry and hypomobility. These techniques can be used immediately to find and correct the causes of all types of pain. These are not cover up procedures, but rather techniques that cure the problem with dramatic results.

Unlike manipulative techniques, MET works via evidenced-based neuro-physiology using the muscle spindles to release tight muscles and decrease tone and excitability, thus restoring the bones and joints to normal mobility and returning them to symmetrical, smooth function.

The two-day courses involve a mix of theory, demonstration and hands-on practice. Actual evaluation and treatments will be performed by each participant using the methods learned. Plenty of time is allotted for hands on practice as well as questions and discussion.

Due to the hands-on nature of these courses, class size is limited to assure a very high quality educational experience. Attend one of our seminars and don't miss this magnificent educational opportunity!

What Are Students Saying about the MET Courses?

"I found Tom's approach to assessment, education and treatment easy to comprehend and quickly applicable. He is also a great role model to give ourselves time to develop skills and experience. Also very entertaining and kept us engaged until end of second day."
