Summer reassess

What's on our minds in June...

Summer recess, summer reassess

If you’ve fallen off the New Year’s resolutions already, summer is the perfect time to reinvigorate those professional and personal goals. Pick up some new skills, or rediscover old favorite hobbies.

Lucky for us, NYC is abundant with classes and activities. Here are a handful of our favorite places to take classes:

NYC Business Solutions offers free classes in the areas of operations, finance, and marketing, and they’ll even fund training for your employees. (Bonus: other free business services, including legal and financial assistance.)

Brooklyn Brainery in Prospect Heights hosts unique classes at affordable prices, making it the perfect place to experiment with new pastimes. Not sure about joining that knitting circle? Take a beginner knitting class for only $40.

General Assembly, which started as a coworking space but has since transformed into an educational institution, offers immersive 8- to 12-week courses in all things digital, from mobile web development to social media marketing.

Fluent City aims to make learning a new language fun and laidback yet highly effective. Practice French during a French wine and cheese class, or dance the night away at a salsa class taught in Spanish. Language learning isn’t just books and flashcards!

Not sure where to start? Course Horse is the ultimate online directory for NYC classes. Check out their summer guide for ideas

SUM Hobbies to Take Up

Enchanted Forest

Color me mindful: adult coloring

Stressed? Put down the pen and pick up a coloring pencil. The meditative relaxation that comes with such books as Enchanted Forest by Johanna Basford makes for quite the stress reliever. We predict you’ll be seeing adult coloring books in bars as often as you see knitting on the subway.
Invisibilia

Listen and learn: Podcasts galore

Podcasts are enjoying a “renaissance” moment, especially since last year’s breakout hit Serial put the humble medium in the limelight. (Did Adnan do it?) 2015 also looks be a great year for podcasts—we recommend NPR’s Invisibilia, which delves into human psychology, and The Allusionist, a series of etymological adventures into the English language.

Adding it all up...

“Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.”
            —Mahatma Ghandi

Don’t let your working life derail you from accomplishing the things you’ve always wanted to do. Use the summer to reassess priorities and aim to make time for hobbies, classes, and any other activities that help you grow and bring you joy.
