In our previous bulletin we reported on John Etherington's interview in Frontline where he said "rehabilitation can no longer be an optional extra". Derby Redesign their Rehabilitation Service

Integrated Community Neuro-rehabilitation Service - Service specification

East Midlands Strategic Clinical Network have recently drafted a service specification for an integrated community neuro-rehabilitation service for the provision of a centralised, cross agency, specialist Neuro-Rehabilitation Service for Adults and they would welcome your comments on the specification. Presenting "Neurology in Primary Care" in partnership with the RCGP SE and SW Thames Valley Faculties

This is a one day seminar which is taking place on the 2nd of July at the Gatwick Holiday Inn, which is being run by the Primary Care Neurology Society in partnership with the RCGP SE and SW Thames Faculties. Our annual issue of Neurodigest is soon to be published, we're just making the finishing touches to the next issue, which is to include an article on 'Developing a Headache Service' lead by Dr Keith Redhead as well and a feature by Prof Pam Enderby who looks at how community rehabilitation has change over the years along with the advances that have been made. Commissioning Excellence directorate launched in response to the NHS’s need to address increasing patient demand in neurology.

Encephalitis Society launches new neuropsychology support service
The Encephalitis Society Neuropsychology Service is now providing support to people with Encephalitis and their carers throughout the UK. We help people access NHS services, or provide support more directly when gaining access to these is difficult, such as when waiting times exceed four months. Help with neurological palliative care survey requested
Neurological Palliative Care Network for Herts, Essex and NE London is planning to address the educational needs of the whole range of professionals working with people with progressive neurological diseases as they face the end of their lives. Vitamin B combined with Omega-3 show a beneficial effect on brain atrophy

A recent study published in the American Journal of Nutrition suggests that the beneficial effect of ω-3 fatty acids on brain atrophy may be confined to subjects with good B vitamin status. The paper went on to state "The results highlight the importance of identifying subgroups likely to benefit in clinical trials." To read more about this study click here.

Multivitamin Use and Risk of Stroke Mortality

Frequent use of multivitamin has been found to be associated with reduced risk of total and ischemic stroke mortality among Japanese people with lower intake of fruits and vegetables. However, the data that risk of death from total stroke was "borderline significant" (HR, 0.87; 95% confidence interval, 0.76-1.01) as well as primarily ischemic stroke (HR, 0.80; 95% confidence interval, 0.63–1.01), but not hemorrhagic stroke To read more about this study click here. A second study found that high intakes of magnesium and potassium but not calcium were significantly associated with reduced risk of stroke in women. You can read about that study here.

Depression in later life increases the risk of dementia

This is the conclusion from a study in primary care practices in the Netherlands and published in Journal of American Geriatrics Society. The study explains that the effect is particularly high in individuals with depression and vascular disorders. For further details click here.
