The 2015 APA-IL State Conference will offer a diverse mix of sessions and mobile workshops that touch local, regional, and national issues. Social events will provide opportunities for networking and relationship-building. And there will be many chances to earn CM credits!

APA-IL Diversity Committee Meeting
July 30th, 9:15 am - 10:45 am

Join us to discuss the committee’s plans for student outreach, participation as a pilot chapter with the APA Ambassadors Program, and other opportunities for programming, education, and professional development. The meeting will be held at the office of Teska Associates, Inc. at 627 Grove Street in Evanston, which is accessible via CTA, Pace, and Metra. The meeting time is intended to accommodate the Metra schedule. If you are interested in attending, please email the committee chair, Todd Vanadilok, at tvanadilok@teskaassociates.com for details. There will be a conference call option for those who wish to participate via phone but are unable to attend in person.

2015 Reduced AICP Exam Fee Scholarship
For those interested in sitting for the November AICP examination, the 2015 Reduced Exam Fee Scholarship program is now available. This program was established to assist individuals who may defer taking or are unable to take the AICP exam because of the cost.
Individuals applying to sit for the exam receive the reduced rate of $145 (combined $70 application and $75 exam fee) and previously approved AICP applicants receive the rate of $75 (exam fee only).
There are a limited number of scholarships available for our members. If you are interested please submit a brief letter or note explaining your financial hardship to Trevor Dick, AICP, APA-IL Professional Development Officer pdo@ilapa.org before July 31, 2015.

CNU Illinois & APA-IL Collaboration Event: West Loop/Fulton Market Walking Tour
|
|
On June 18th, Benet Haller from the City of Chicago and Scott Goodman, a co-founder of Sterling Bay gave a walking tour of the West Loop and the Fulton Market District. They discussed the recent development, historic district designation, and the challenges and opportunities of rehabbing a cold storage for Google. June 24th CMS Workshop: The Value of Trees
|
|
This workshop was intended to provide education on the value of trees and how we can move forward as professionals to respect and protect our regional forest. Thanks to the session’s presenters: Lydia Scott, Director of the Chicago Regional Trees Initiative (CRTI), Morton Arboretum, who described the CRTI and moderated the panel discussion; Lindsay Darling, Research Assistant, Morton Arboretum, who described the Oak Ecosystem Plan, a collaboration of the Arboretum and Chicago Wilderness; Louise Yeung, Associate Planner, Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP), who covered the Green Infrastructure Vision Ecosystem Service Valuation Reports recently completed by CMAP; Amy Olson, Landscape Architect, who provided insights into current issues facing trees in our region as well as her experience with tree preservation ordinances; and Todd Degner, Davey Resource Group, who discussed the social dynamics and community benefits of maintaining trees in our region. Special thanks to the program’s coordinators: Karen Miller, Kane County; Christina Bader, Farr Associates; Kindy Kruller, Cook County Forest Preserve; and Nik Davis, Houseal Lavigne Associates.

July 8th Resilient Chicago: Urban Flood Management Workshop
|
|
Approximately 80 people attended this event at Loyola University which focused on actions local governments can take to address the issue of urban flooding in the greater Chicago metropolitan area through such actions as applying the No Adverse Impact (NAI) framework for floodplain management and integrating green infrastructure into community planning efforts. The APA-IL was a partner on the program that was organized by Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant, Illinois Department of Natural Resources’ Coastal Management Program, ASFPM, and Midwestern Regional Climate Center. Along with APA-IL other presenters and partners included ASFPM, Metropolitan Planning Council, City of Chicago Department of Water Management, City of Blue Island, Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning, and Loyola University Institute for Environmental Sustainability. A post-workshop reception was also held at a nearby establishment immediately after the workshop.
