             NEWSLETTER & SCHEDULE
June 29th, 2015
Dear Friends:

I wanted to give a tip of my hat to my friend Ryo Sasaki.  Ryo is an excellent trumpet player and he and his band have been holding down a steady gig year after year as the house jazz band in Washington Square Park - unofficially, of course.  Jazz is like a weed that can never be gotten rid of.  Like that tenacious green shoot that somehow manages to thrive in a crack in the asphalt, jazz will grow where it can.  Washington Square Park is filled with buskers but Ryo and his group (informally the "Park Rangers") have secured the shaded area in the west corner and have made it their own little out-door jazz club.  People gather on the benches to hear be-bop classics played in the sunshine.  Tourists gawk, pigeons flock, skateboarders roll by, girls in short-shorts, fat old men squinting as they walk by the quintet.  Ryo, with his shades and straw hat, phrasing like Miles, delights the crowd with quips like; "if you have a request, write it on the back of a twenty-dollar bill" but in the thickest Japanese accent you can imagine!  The guys do well, they make their living from the tips thrown in their bucket.  They probably do better than a gig at Smalls...

I love from time to time to grab my melodica (a breath powered mini-keyboard) and sit in with the band.  It always delights me to approach the group with my axe strapped to my back and pretend that I'm the Charlie Parker of Washington Square.  The cats welcome me with a smile and we launch into "Confirmation". Jazz on a summer's day, in the greatest most colorful park in the greatest most colorful city, New York!  Jazz lives here, my friends, in unlikely places but it lives.  If you're in town and want a taste of what New York is really all about, head over to Washington Square and catch a set of the Park Rangers and if you can, toss them a few bucks.

Regards,

Spike
