Welcome to the latest edition of the ADCET newsletter. We had a successful webinar last week with over 90 people joining us. Thank you to Debbie Hindle for the presentation.  We are keen to hear from anyone with ideas on future webinars.
 
In this newsletter:

  ReadSpeaker now on ADCET

ReadSpeaker allows a user to click the Listen button and the player starts reading the content of the page. The text is also highlighted while it is being read, reinforcing a better understanding of the text.

The settings menu enables users to customize the reading experience. They can control the reading speed and how the text is highlighted, either sentence by sentence or word by word. They can select text to only listen to certain parts of the page. Visit adcet.edu.au to try it out.

How to transition to tertiary education: Helpful hints for people with autism spectrum disorder is a freely available new NDCO resource that aims to help students with ASD navigate the new learning environment. It includes useful information on the learning context, managing studies, identifying and using strengths, communication tips, and managing stress and anxiety, The resource aims to increase self-determination by assisting students better understand their context, identify when and what supports could be helpful, and encouraging students to seek additional support when necessary.. The NDCO Indigenous Awareness Project has culminated in a comprehensive website that supports the need of services and their staff to better understand the culture and customs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, particularly around the subject of disability, how that is seen within an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander context and how best to engage with individuals, their families and their communities. Creating accessible documents: Word and PDF Vision Australia are offering a number of workshops where participants will learn both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills to create accessible documents. These hands-on workshops will demonstrate how to create accessible documents using Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Pro. Gearing Up for Choice and Control  The Tasmanian biennial Gearing Up Expos will be held across the state in September. Hobart - 2 September, Launceston - 9 September and Burnie - 16 September.  The expo’s will offer an invaluable way for people with disability their families and carers to connect with service providers and explore what services and products are available to support their pathway, whether that is to employment, further education or community services. Further information »

The inaugural Inclusive Education Summit: Making sense of everyday practice, will be held from Friday 31 July – Sunday 2 August 2015, in Melbourne. This annual conference seeks to strengthen inclusive education practices serving students from early years settings to further and higher education. Improved equity in education can only be achieved by eliminating the economic, cultural and physical barriers that currently impede learning for disadvantaged students. Further information »

EPHEA 2015  The Equity Practitioners in Higher Education Australasia (EPHEA)  2015 conference will be held at Deakin University Geelong Waterfront Campus, Victoria,  from 9–12 November, 2015.  The conference will focus on collaboration and creativity as key factors in repositioning the equity agenda into the future, and provide a platform for recognising and celebrating recent successes and innovations. Further information »

Longitudinal study of school leavers with autism  The transition from school to adult life for people with ASD and their families is one of the most difficult periods to traverse as services are fragmented. However, this period remains poorly coordinated and not well understood. Therefore the main aim of this longitudinal study is to understand the process of transitioning from school to adult life for Australian students diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and their families. Further information »

Improving Access to Graphics: National Online Survey of University Students with Vision Impairment  Blind and vision impaired students who have attended an Australian University in the last five years are invited to participate in a 10 minute online survey.  Participating in the survey on access to graphics in Higher Education by vision impaired students will help the researchers understand current practices in Australia and develop practical recommendations for improvement. Further information »
