KARTEMQUIN FILMS

June 2015

Tonight we'll celebrate our 49th year at the KTQ Summer Soirée.

A donor has challenged us to raise $25,000 tonight - if we do, they will match that amount! Even if you cannot attend, you can join in!
Please text KTQ, your pledge AMOUNT, and NAME to 56512 (eg: KTQ 100 John Doe).

We have much to cheer: our 2015 Diverse Voices in Docs fellows aced their pitches to top documentary funders; On Beauty will open in theaters in LA and NYC this July; Hard Earned garnered superb audience reactions in its TV debut; Almost There was a hit in Sheffield in London; and Saving Mes Aynak is inspiring attention and action worldwide.

We look forward to discussing all this and more - including new projects - at the #KTQSummersoiree, while enjoying this view!

SEE SAVING MES AYNAK ON JULY 1
Saving Mes Aynak Official Trailer
We are now giving Saving Mes Aynak away for free to the people of Afghanistan.

The award-winning documentary exposes a Chinese company's plan to turn a 5,000 archeological site in Afghanistan into a copper mine, destroying priceless Buddhist relics.

For the rest of the world, many different ways to watch on July 1 - ‪#SaveMesAynak‬ Day - are offered here. Thank you to everyone who has already supported. Even just $5 helps to sustain our public education and political activism campaign.

Please back us to see the film and help Save Mes Aynak!

AT FESTIVALS & IN THEATERS
We are very proud to be bringing On Beauty to theaters!

Its theatrical premiere is on Friday, July 24 at Laemmle Music Hall in Beverly Hills, beginning a week-long run, with another week run opening on Friday, July 31 at Cinema Village in New York. Expect guest appearances from Emmy-nominated director Joanna Rudnick and stars Rick Guidotti, Jayne Waithera, and Sarah Kanney. There's also special screenings ahead in Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Berkeley. More details.

RogerEbert.com recently called the film "a masterful example of how cinema can serve as a humanizing force in the world."
Almost There headed to England this June, celebrating its international premiere at Sheffield Doc/Fest, and a London premiere at the Bertha DocHouse.

This "instant classic" is next screening this weekend at the Nantucket Film Festival and in a return to Sebastopol as "Best of the Fest." It then returns to its Hoosier roots at the Indy Film Fest in July.

The "extraordinary biopic" of elderly outsider artist Peter Anton has many more festivals ahead (to be announced soon), and we are now taking bookings for fall and winter.

Help us bring it to your town!
In The Game will world premiere this July as an official selection of the Madrid International Film Festival

A new Kartemquin documentary film directed by Peabody award-winner Maria Finitzo (Mapping Stem Cell Research: Terra Incognita and 5 Girls), In the Game follows the ups and downs of a girls’ soccer team to reveal the very real obstacles that low-income students confront in their quest for higher education.

We're also delighted to announce that the film's Chicago premiere will be coming this August. Learn more about the film.
ON TELEVISION and VOD
Hard Earned, Kartemquin's landmark six-part series about getting by on low wages in America, is now available on VOD (check with your cable provider) in the USA, and in the rest of the world on Al Jazeera English.

A provocative and in-depth look at the lives of five working-class American families, Hard Earned follows both at work and at home, as they juggle the rising costs of housing, education, food, medical bills and more – all while working low-wage jobs.

In late May we celebrated the first ever meeting of the entire cast with a special screening event in Chicago: view photos from the event.

The Bertha Foundation has awarded a production grant of $10,000 to The Prosecutors.

PROGRAMS & ADVOCACY
After 6 months of developing their new projects, the 2015 fellows of our Diverse Voices in Docs (DVID) program pitched in front of a roundtable of leading documentary industry funders for their final session.

Congratulations to the 2015 DVID class! Save the date for their graduation screening: October 11, 2015!
Kartemquin is part of the Indie Caucus, advocating for the importance of maintaining the prominence of independent documentaries within a strong public media. So we were delighted to read a new op-ed by filmmaker Abigail Disney "Public, Not-For-Profit Media Is More Important Than Ever," which shares that same position, specifically citing a Kartemquin film.

Disney writes: "Public, independent documentaries are the last bulwark of integrity in the battle against conformity, against the monotone emanating from our televisions. They give us the chance to immerse ourselves in the perspectives divergent from our own... "The Homestretch" reveals truths about race, class and opportunity in our own backyard and displays the tenacity of three homeless teens to reclaim and redefine a life of abandonment. These stories are complex. They are transformational. They are necessary."
