Hello again!

So great to be back with another info-packed edition of "From The HealthShrink!" Before jumping in, I'd like to answer a question I'm being asked frequently and that is, "Susan, what exactly is an Eating Psychology Coach?" As many of you know, I've been a psychotherapist for more than 20 years. I've also more recently been professionally trained by and graduated from The Institute for the Psychology of Eating. As a Certified Eating Psychology Coach I work with people who have challenges around weight, body image, overeating, binge eating, and a number of other health concerns such as sleep, fatigue, digestion, mood issues, and more. In essence, I use a holistic approach that integrates nutrition and psychology. I'm very excited about my new role and how it helps others and I know you will be too!

If you'd like further clarification, please contact me below.

What's new?

May 28th-31st:
Graduation/Conference at The Institute for the Psychology of Eating, Boulder, CO. Here I am with Marc David, Founder & Director of IPE along with approximately 200+ other graduates from around the world celebrating, learning and creating positive energy and eating psychology community!

I'm feeling proud, excited and humbled in the moment!

June 2nd: "The Art of Slowing Down - Eating, Sex, & Breathing," a presentation filled with cutting edge info was given by yours truly and 2 colleagues, Dave Cash (www.breathehereandnowfitness.com) and Tatiana Dellepiane ( TatianaDellepine @ gmail.com )at Symphony Space in the Upper West Side of Manhattan. It was a chilly, rainy night yet 17 ambitious souls showed up to learn about the deleterious effects of stress upon the body and how to slow things down. By the conclusion of the seminar, participants left feeling lighter and more informed and motivated. If you're interested in having The HealthShrink present at your work site, place of worship, or otherwise, I'm raring to go. I'm certain you'll find the multi-faceted discussion on how stress physiology, the relaxation response, breathing, awareness, pleasure, meal timing and more,  profoundly influence our digestion, calorie burning and body size. After all, what we eat is only 1/2 the story of good nutrition.

Psst....I'll reveal the other extremely important 2nd 1/2 of the story at your presentation. To Make your request, contact Susan below.

This Month: June is Special!

June 21st: Summer Solstice - Marks the beginning of summer in the northern hemisphere. Slow down enough to give gratitude to the sun, our life-giving star. Also, take time to enjoy the longest day of the year with all of its light and warmth! For fun summer solstice activities in your area, google summer solstice events 2015.

June 21st: Father's Day - This is a perfect time for us to stop and acknowledge our fathers who deserve to be honored.  I think of my father, Daniel, on this day with love and deep emotion. He died 2 1/2 years ago of Parkinson's disease-related disorders. He was 89 years old and our time together particularly during the last 3 months of his life were most precious and a gift. He wasn't the "perfect father" and I wasn't the "perfect daughter" but I treasure his memory and am eternally grateful for all that he gave to me throughout my life. I wish you all a peaceful and loving day with your fathers in person, in memory, and in your hearts. If you're not able to relax into the spirit of this day for whatever reason, reach out to a trusted friend or family member for support. Deep breathe, relax, and thrive. This is so important for our good health through and through.

June 28th: Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender (LGBT) Pride Day - 46 years ago, there were a series of protests conducted by the LGBT community against the local police for raiding and arresting patrons of the Stonewall Inn located on Christopher Street in Greenwich Village, NYC. This was a time when LGBT people could be arrested simply for being themselves. It was also a time when being LGBT was diagnosable as a mental illness. During the early morning of June 28th, 1969, the LGBT community fought back against the police. The Stonewall Riots ensued and for days afterward more protests followed in the gay community. This was the beginning of the gay rights movement in NYC and then around the world. On June 28, 1970, the first gay pride march took place in NYC, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Chicago all commemorating the Stonewall riots anniversary. Nowadays, LGBT pride festivities take place all over the globe toward the end of June remembering the Stonewall riots.

Whether one identifies as LGBT or as an LGBT ally, it's a wonderful time to celebrate freedom, authenticity, and truth. Congratulations to all who took and continue to take the risks of "coming out" first to yourselves and in many cases to loved ones and more!  Being and living as your special, unique self is a gift to the world. Wholehearted gratitude and congratulations are also in order to all people who have supported and loved their LGBT friend, family-member, co-worker, acquaintance, etc. Your openness has helped heal an individual as well as an entire community of fellow human beings! Being able to be and express our true selves, as well as accepting another as s/he truly is, together induce the relaxation response which is essential healing ointment for the mind, body and soul.

Rise & Shine • Come & Get It:

Being attuned to Bio-Circadian-Nutrition Rhythm for Fat Loss & Optimal Health

by

Susan D'Addario, Founder & Eating Psychology Coach

The HealthShrink

Intro
Given that in the Northern hemisphere June is the month of the summer solstice, (first day of summer and longest day of the year), it seemed ideal timing to write a piece on the very real connection between the 24-hour period which follows the earth’s rotation around the sun known as the circadian clock and our bodies own natural rhythm.  We all know that the earth revolves around the sun and that it takes close to 24-hours to get this done.  But, did you know that our bodies also have a natural metabolic rhythm that mimics the rhythm of the circadian clock? The circadian clock interfaces with metabolism in numerous ways that are essential for maintaining metabolic homeostasis.1 And when our lifestyles are out of sync with the circadian rhythm this takes us away from optimal health and our ability to lose fat. It’s all true and simply stated, not eating and living in sync with the rhythm 24-hour clock can lead to non-caloric weight gain and increased stress-levels.2

Luxuriating the Strawberry Way

June is strawberry season here on the east coast of the USA.  The days are longer, the weather is warmer, and for many the desire to spend more time outside while keeping cool kicks in.

Here is simplicity at its best and using goat’s milk ice cream allows many with lactose intolerance to enjoy as well. There are relatively few ingredients in this ice cream which you can find in your local health food store or Whole Foods shop.

For this treat, wash, dry, remove stems, and slice the strawberries.

Strawberries & Goat’s Milk Ice Cream Parfait
Serving Size 4

12 organic strawberries
1 pint of goat’s milk ice cream (I use LaLoos Goat’s Milk Ice Cream – Vanilla Snowflake)
Optional; 2 tablespoons of raw, cacao nibs and/or chopped walnuts

If you’re using raw cacao nibs or nuts, please empty the entire pint of ice cream into a serving bowl and stir in these items. You may also mix in the strawberries at this point or add at the end as a topping. Serve in 4 separate cups or dessert bowls.

Enjoy immediately!
