Juneteenth is the oldest-known celebration of the end of slavery in the US. As we remember the events of Juneteenth, it is important that we recognize the continuing struggles for freedom by people of color around the world. While black folks are physically free, the legacies of slavery persist to this day. Examples include the Dominican Republic's discrimination against Haitian migrants based on colorism, as well as the violence against black African migrants by lighter skinned European-backed rebel factions in North Africa.
Today, we want to focus on providing context behind the horrific situation in the Dominican Republic and Haiti. It’s not been an easy week (Re: Charleston shooting, Memphis shooting, Dominican Republic deportations), but if Juneteenth teaches us anything, it’s that we are resilient and powerful beyond measure. Happy Juneteenth!

Take Action in Response to the Charleston Shooting
Song of the Day
Hang onto the world as it spins around
Just don't let the spin get you down
Things are moving fast
Hold on tight and you will last
Take it from me, someday we'll all be free, yeah
Keep on walking tall, hold your head up high
And lay your dreams right up to the sky
Sing your greatest song
And you'll keep going, going on
- Donny Hathaway
