Empowering the Community

Through Sexual Education
Partnership with non-profit Marie Stopes
Fundacion Cielo’s partnership with non-profit Maria Stopes brought a week full of training for high school students, teachers and midwives.
Last summer, we identified a high level of teen pregnancies in high school girls and we decided that through sexual education we could empower these women and promote school attendance and hopefully increase the rate of graduating students currently at 14-16%.
We then decided to extend training to professors and Midwives. About 25 Midwives participated. Midwives attend an average of 6 births a year. In Mexico, 50% of maternal deaths in rural zones are the result of obstetric emergencies. This is why the service provided by these rural midwives is indispensable.
We hope the training of local professors will allow us to give continuity to these programs in the community.

Children and Adult Education
  • Our children's classes average about 60+ students. We've been teaching the kids how to juggle, speak English, and even play guitar. The children are also very curious about our cultural backgrounds so we brought a map and pointed to the areas where we're from. We've been opening a whole world of possibilities for these kids as they realize the rest of the world is full of different languages and people.
  • Our adult literacy program was a great turnout. We expected 15 women and ended up with 62. During this time we were able to practice reading with some of the women, and taught others how to write their name for the first time.
The people here are very eager to learn and are taking every opportunity given to them. It's because of your support and donations that we're able to make this happen for the towns of Chumayel and Teabo.
