Issue 2 - Summer Term 2015
The official opening of our new facilities by HRH the Earl of Wessex was a great day for the school and I hope all those who attended enjoyed it as much as I did.

All of the pupils performed their parts magnificently and Prince Edward and his party were impressed by the behaviour and eloquence of the pupils they met. The Prince has visited the school on a number of occasions in the past and greatly enjoyed returning to see our new additions. Meeting royalty isn’t something most of us do in our normal everyday lives and for the new front bench, who had a pivotal role in the visit, it was a challenge they met with great aplomb.

On arrival the royal party received a great reception at the front of the school and Prince Edward stopped to talk to a number of pupils before heading into Big School and a private meeting with the Senior Leadership Team, then up to the Library where he met the Governors and Haberdashers, including the Master.  After meeting more pupils on the way to the Sixth Form Centre, he was shown around by Michael Barratt, who returned for the occasion, and our Head of Sixth Form Belinda Hayes, meeting and talking to many Sixth Formers as he went.

His progress down to the new Humanities building and Hamilton Hall was slowed by many more opportunities to pause and talk to pupils before enjoying a display of Taiko Drumming outside the Hall. This was a fantastic display which even the slight drizzle of rain did not dampen his enthusiasm for.

Once inside the Hamilton Hall the Prince spoke to the assembled Year 7 pupils and the invited guests which included donors to the campaign, Governors and Haberdashers. He encouraged the pupils to make as much noise as possible to demonstrate their enthusiasm for the new facilities before unveiling a plaque to mark the occasion.

I would like to thank all of the members of staff and pupils who worked so hard to make the day a success for the school. Pictures of the day can be found on our website and on our school
Facebook page.

Head of Sixth Form

Congratulations to Mrs Hayes who will be taking on the new role of Head of Sixth with effect from September 2015.  Mrs Hayes will now have responsibility for both Sixth Form year groups, supported by her new deputy (see below).

New Deputies

Congratulations to Miss Williams (left) who will become our new Deputy Head of Sixth Form, working closely with Mrs Hayes, and Miss Biddulph who will become the new Deputy Head of Talbot House in September 2015. We wish them both every success in their new roles.

AGS Forum - change of date

In order to allow for more Old Novaportans to attend this event, we have moved the AGS Forum to Friday 10th July 13:45 to 15:45.
Lower Sixth pupils benefit enormously from the advice of former pupils on university choices, courses and career options. Please contact Mrs Coomer by email if you are able to support this key AGS event. amanda.coomer@adamsgs.org.uk

Boarding Video

Are you or someone you know considering the benefits of boarding? If so you may wish to view our new boarding video in which our pupils talk about what being an Adams' boarder means to them. You can watch the video on our YouTube Channel.

Tea & Jazz

Unfortunately the forecast is not looking good for Sunday's outdoor Tea & Jazz concert and so the event will now be held on the main school site, safely under cover in our lovely new Hamilton Hall. We hope you will join us for a wonderful afternoon of music with the AGS Swing Band, Newport Girls' High School Jazz Band and some of our very own talented music teachers. Sunday 14 June, 2-4pm - Hamilton Hall.

Athletics success

Congratulations to Connor Bentley who won the 3000m at the Shropshire Track Championships in a new personal best of 9.29.6. He lapped all but two in the field and even lapped a couple twice!

West Midlands Schools Orienteering Championships 2015

AGS fielded a 14 strong team in this annual event, held this year at Park Hall, Stoke. Many of the team were relative novices and so expectations of a podium place were not high. However, club orienteerer Sastin Codling-Loidi did very well to gain 3rd place in the U15 category. Hopefully with some more practise, a more experienced team will return next year.

Attingham Relays

Two teams competed in the Attingham Relays. The junior team of James Davies, Brandon Edwards and Quang Tran finished a creditable 11th while in an exciting finish to the senior race, Mr Matthew Jones sprinted past the former Shrewsbury Athletic Club winner. Arthur Charlesworth got the team off to a good start in his last race for the school and Mr Sedman-Smith ran the fastest lap of the race.
