The World's First Legal Empowerment Leadership Course
Budapest, 30 Nov - 3 Dec 2015

Dear Friends,

We are pleased to announce a groundbreaking leadership course on the practice and theory of legal empowerment – the first of its kind.

APPLY HERE BY 14 JULY

Our movement to place the power of law into the hands of people is growing. Survivors of police abuse are serving on civilian oversight boards. Laborers are monitoring working conditions. Women farmers are advocating for laws that respect their land rights.

This course will bring together leaders dedicated to legal empowerment to reflect on history, strategy, and evidence.

We will explore questions like: “How best to provide frontline legal advocates with support and supervision?” “What have we learned about state policies to recognize and regulate grassroots justice efforts?” “What are the prospects for financing legal empowerment at scale?”

We will look in-depth at three case studies, covering land and natural resource rights, effective delivery of health services, and the evolution of community paralegals in South Africa.

The course runs from 30 November to 3 December 2015 in Budapest, Hungary. It is a collaboration between the Central European University, BRAC UniversitySouth Asian Institute of Advanced Legal and Human Rights Studies, The Open Society Justice Initiative and Namati

The application deadline is July 14 2015. Scholarships are available to a limited number of applicants.

We invite applications from representatives of civil society organizations, governments, development agencies, and universities.

This opportunity couldn’t be more timely, with access to justice likely to be a key target of the UN’s new Sustainable Development Goals.

From the grassroots to the halls of power, we are making an impact. This is a chance to reflect on what we’ve learned, and to chart a common course for the future.

Please join us.

In solidarity,

Vivek Maru and the whole Namati team
