GEELONG REGION CROSS COUNTRY

SEASON 2015
BUNDOORA XC WRAP

Do conditions get any better? Would Captain Spence, sitting on a beach in Bali, have been jealous? Can Nick Wightman be beaten?!!

Bundoora is always a long day with events running from 10am 'til 3.30pm. But it was a day for sunscreen and to lap up the perfect conditions. This round of XC was the Victorian XC Championships and selection trial for the National XC Champs in Melbourne late August. And Geelong now has 3 Victorian XC Champions!

Early in the day, 2014 U15 state champ Heidi Demeo held on for the win by 4 secs in the U16 4km Women's race in 14.11. That's a time that would have just missed the podium in the U18 event!

Cassidy Shaw, 2nd last year in the U17 event went one better this year in the U18 6km race to take the crown also by 4 secs in a time of 19.28. Super fast running over that course - well done!

And in the final race, Nick Wightman made it 3 wins in a row this season by storming home over the last lap. Box Hill's Rhys Jones held a commanding lead out in front through the 2nd of three 4km laps, but Nick kicked hard with about 3km to go to take the lead 300m from the finish - amazing effort & he looked justifiably pleased with himself as he crossed the line!

Also on the podium after brilliant runs were Sarah Waters, 3rd in the open women's 8km, Claudia Verstraten 3rd in the women's U20 6km and Jacques Verstraten 3rd in the U18 men just 8 secs behind Cassidy.

And we managed to field an open women's team - woohoo! But only just. Hopefully a stronger women's team again at the next round.

Congrats and thanks to everyone who competed and supported at Bundoora today!

Next up is the Albert Park Road Race Sunday June 28 (NOTE SUNDAY NOT SATURDAY). Julian will be back for that, hoping they'll have a best tan category!
