Four Ways Gluten Affects Weight Gain, and Weight Loss.

Weight loss or weight gain is an indicator of overall health. Gluten affects body composition in the following four ways:

1. Inflammation. Gluten elicits an immune reaction that causes inflammation. Inflammation leads to fluid retention. The fluid retention can be local, systemic and massive.

2. Dysbiosis. Gluten causes gut bacteria imbalance. When imbalanced, our gut bacteria are unable to help us digest and absorb food properly. As a result, nutrients we need are not absorbed.

3. Malabsorption. Nutrient malabsorption can result in weight gain or weight loss.

Weight Gain - Chronic intestinal damage results in malabsorption. When we do not have the nutrients we need, our hunger mechanism is triggered. But, we may absorb some nutrients perfectly, so as we eat more to gain the missing nutrients, we over consume the nutrients we absorb leading to weight gain. Also, if nutrients are not absorbed in the small intestine, then they get dumped into the colon where bacteria ferment them into short chain fatty acids which are absorbed. Finally, if certain nutrients are not being properly absorbed, edema of the lower extremities will occur, which may look like fat to some, but is actually fluid.

Weight Loss - Diarrhea will cause malabsorption, since nutrients do not have enough transit time in the intestine to be absorbed. The celiac immune reaction along the intestinal lining causes malabsorption. The intestine is inflamed and thickened, surface area is diminished and nutrients are unable to pass through the thickened lining. If nutrients are not being absorbed, then muscles cannot be rebuilt. Nutrients needed for energy metabolism will be missing. Even the appetite can be affected, where the hunger mechanism no longer functions properly.

4. Thyroid. Gluten affects the thyroid, causing hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism. Both influence body composition, weight gain or weight loss.

Tip: If unexplained weight loss, weight gain or malaise are present, review the Body Composition Category. You can also look up your symptoms under the Health Condition Search. Note the causes, including nutrient deficiencies. Then, follow the steps listed for correcting the issues.
