We have issues

In our group of friends, we have lots of food issues represented. We've got some vegetarians and some vegans. A few folks with Celiac disease can't tolerate gluten. We've got egg allergies, stone fruit allergies, and even someone with a passionate distaste for avocado.

Planning a picnic with these folks can be challenging, but we were able to make it work earlier this month when we organized a Food Issue-Friendly Picnic in lovely Laurelhurst Park in Portland.

The Menu

We put together a simple, delicious menu that didn't cause anyone to break out in hives:

Do's and Don'ts

Keep your guests healthy and happy with these tips:
  • Collect and distribute a list of food issues in advance, so you can be sure to have offerings for everyone.

  • Not every dish has to be edible by every guest; just make sure everyone will have enough to eat.

  • Make cards with ingredient lists so guests can choose for themselves. You may not know that soy sauce has gluten in it, but your gluten-intolerant guests will!

Tasty Tidbits from Around the Web

Congrats to Picnic Society Member, Trish!

Trish was the winner of the drawing we held last month. We sent her a picnic basket stocked with smoked salmon, cracked pepper crackers, fig spread, chocolate covered almonds, and of course, a bottle of wine. If she adds fruit and cheese, she's set!

We hope you enjoy your picnic, Trish!
