On June 23, 2015, the New York City Council approved a second year of funding for the Worker Cooperative Business Development Initiative, expanding its commitment to support cooperative businesses that are owned and controlled by residents of the city. The current funding for $2.1 million is a 75% increase over last year’s grant of $1.2 million, and follows supportive legislation passed in March requiring the city's economic development arm to track municipal support of worker cooperatives. We will be presenting at the Association of Cooperative Educators (ACE) Institute, which will take place July 12-15, 2015 at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Massachusetts. An initial program, including our sessions on building communities of practice and municipal investment in cooperative development as a tool for community and economic development, is available here.

The Democracy at Work Institute is hosting a special half-day training at Eastern Conference for Workplace Democracy on our 3-part framework for worker coop development. The training, "What is Worker Cooperative Development?" will look at business development, cooperative capacity development and ecosystem development, including both presentations and active learning exercises.

We are excited to be partnering with B Lab, the organization behind B Corporations, to help worker cooperatives measure their social and environmental performance. Our version of the assessment, including questions specific to worker cooperatives, will launch July 10.

On June 26-28, DAWI took its cooperative developer fellows on a study trip to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, where worker cooperatives have been integrated into the larger ecosystem of community economic development for nearly two decades.
