Deprecating JSTransform and react-tools
As many people have noticed already, React and React Native have both switched their respective build systems to make use of Babel. This replaced JSTransform, the source transformation tool that we wrote at Facebook. JSTransform has been really good for us over the past several years, however as the JavaScript language continues to evolve, the architecture we used has begun to show its age. We've faced maintenance issues and lagged behind implementing new language features. Last year, Babel (previously 6to5) exploded onto the scene, implementing new features at an amazing pace. Since then it has evolved a solid plugin API, and implemented some of our non-standard language features (JSX and Flow type annotations).

The State of Flux
Facebook announced Flux at F8 in April as an application paradigm to complement React. But Flux has been pretty nebulous, as there hasn’t been much code released. The examples in Facebook’s Flux repository gave a better idea of its overall composition, but there was still a ton of boilerplate involved, and that’s usually where a library comes along to bring some level of abstraction and convenience.

Navigating the React Ecosystem
The speed of innovation in JavaScript Land is so high, that some people even think it is counter-productive. A library can go from early-adopter toy, to state-of-art, to obsolescence in the course of a few months. Being able to identify a tool that is going to stay relevant for at least another year is becoming an art itself.

When React was released two years ago, I was just learning Angular, and I quickly dismissed React as some obscure yet-another-templating-library. During those two years, Angular really gained a foothold among JavaScript developers, and almost became synonymous with modern JS development. I even started seeing Angular in very conservative corporate environments, and I took it’s bright future for granted.
