It’s an exciting month ahead for GMH

... definitely a time to keep an eye on our website blog  & Facebook page.

Kelly, Olivia (GMH Admin Director) & Carol Forde (Barrie Rotary Club) have arrived in Ghana and are heading north to facilitate the handing over ceremony of our medical equipment donations for 2015 to our 10 partner rural district hospitals (pictured below).

The types of equipment being donated this year are those that empower staff to have the capacity to provide life saving care, and include such items as
  • oxygen concentrators
  • neonatal resuscitation equipment
  • suction machines
  • nebulizer machines
  • portable autoclaves
  •  patient vital signs monitors
  • and more.
Our medical elective program kicks off in Navrongo Hospital in just over a week!

We are excited this year to combine Canadian and UK medical students on this ~8 week elective, which takes a good look at rural global health in resource poor countries.

Dr. Hannah Brotherstone (picture above), a superstar volunteer from our GMH UK chapter, will be joining Olivia and Kelly soon to focus on setting up a pathway for health care professionals from around the world to volunteer in our partner hospitals while being insured and registered with Ghana Health Service.

  • Expanding our Helping Babies Breathe workshops to train more remote and rural community midwives on neonatal resuscitation
  • supplying ophthalmic nurses with eye glasses and protective sunglasses (thanks to BiQi, the generous owner of the Shoppers Drug Mart Pharmacy in Parry Sound)
  • and expanding our partnership to include the 3 newly upgraded district hospitals in the Upper East and West Regions
are a few more of the tasks at hand this month for GMH.

GMH Amalgamates G-Roots

GMH is very excited and proud to unveil our recent amalgamation with the non-profit organization, G-Roots, and our adoption of their pilot project to initiate a new branching of public health education programs.

The pilot project now underway in northern Ghana combines sustainable income generation, via a sheep lending farming program, with monthly asset management, and public health education workshops. This project is designed to sustainably improve access to income, leading to greater individual economic stability, and an increased ability to invest in accessing health resources, education and healthier food and drinking choices.

G-Roots was a Canadian non-profit founded by local Ghanaians working with young Canadians to alleviate poverty in rural and remote areas around Sandema in the Builsa District.

More details on this project will be found in our upcoming Annual Report. If you would like more information and are potentially interested in sponsoring a sheep for an impoverished farming family for $150, please email Olivia.

Joe Abobtey is our Featured Volunteer of the Month for May & June 2015

Joe Abobtey is a founder of G-Roots, directs the Horizon's Children's Centre in Sandema and now is a new amazing part of the GMH family! Joe is extremely excited about being able to lead a project that looks to improve the health status of his surrounding community/rural neighbours (choose which prefer) by public health education and income generating programs. This winter Joe showed inspiring leadership as he worked without needing oversight to develop this pilot project, run two public health workshops, write reports and even pay costs out of pocket when needed - determined to push things forward and make the amalgamation work.

Joe's self-driven commitment to our newest pilot project is an excellent indicator of its future success!

Joe, we are proud to have you a part of our organization and are happy to call you our volunteer of the month!
