What is the meaning of Freedom - Свабода - Libertad?
As the 4
th of July is celebrated in the USA each year, the word ‘freedom’ is heard ringing loud and clear….but what is the
true meaning of freedom?
To those of us working in anti-trafficking movement, it means the right of every person to be free. Free from coercion or threats to deprive them of their personal freedom. Freedom from fear and abuse at the hands of those who enslave others.
To the women survivors residing at LifeWay’s safe house, it means having the courage and strength to escape from their traffickers and move towards a life of freedom and self-sufficiency.
Freedom embraces an even larger meaning than being free from oppressors. It means freedom from hatred and prejudice, freedom from being intolerant of others, and freedom from ego and feeling superior to others.
As Nelson Mandela so eloquently said:
“For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains,
but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.”
Let us all remember the significance of ‘freedom’ in our lives, and the transformative power that true freedom can yield in the world.
Sr. Joan S. Dawber honored by Pax Christi Metro New York
On June 7, LifeWay Network’s Executive Director, Sister Joan S. Dawber, SC, received Pax Christi Metro New York’s 2015 Sr. Christine Mulready Peacemaker Award for being an exemplary witness to peace through her work on behalf of those who have been trafficked. Joe Dirr, a LifeWay volunteer, also received a Peacemaker Award for the work he does for Pax Christi as a financial advisor.
