Focus on Walking in the Auvergne:
The Auvergne region is deep in the heart of France and is a landscape that has been forged by volcanic eruptions. Together the Monts Dore and the Chaine des Puys include 80 volcanoes. The Puy de Dome is the tallest volcano (1,465m) in the Chaine des Puys whilst the Cantal supervolcano is classiffied as the biggest volcano in Europe. The Auvergne's amazing landscape includes volcanic and glacial lakes, volcanic domes, rocky cliffs, secluded valleys and dramatic waterfalls. These varied landscapes are also a haven for wildlife, including birds of prey, deer, marmots and a host of wild flowers. So you won't be surprised to learn that the variation of landscape also provides hills to suit every walker; from the domes of the volcanic Chain des Puys to the steep ridges of the Cantal mountains. And it's one of the least populated regions in Europe.
At High Point Holidays we have attempted to cover this stunning variety with our Guided and Independent walking holidays in this amazing region:
Self Guided Walking Holidays
Cantal Mountains - The Rugged Heart of France
Amazing Auvergne: Volcanoes, Lakes and Historic Villages
Summit of Auvergne: Tour of Sancy

Volcanoes of the Auvergne
The Puy Pariou and the Puy de Cone in Auvergne are examples of the Strombolian type of volcano with gentle slopes for walking paths to ascend the rim.
The Puy de Dome is a magnificent example of a Pelean volcano. With this type of volcano, eruptions are separated by long intervals with the magma building slowly and the gas eventually escaping creating an enormous explosion. Its flanks are often very steep.
Lac Pavin is a crater lake. This volcano has created the deepest lake in the Auvergne at 92m. Visit our Volcanoes of the Auvergne page to read more.

Changes Afoot
Over the coming months you may notice a change of address and phone number for High Point Holidays. This is because our head office base will be moving from its current home in Dorset to Somerset. So still in the same region of England.
We do not wish you to worry about whether you have used the correct address or not, so, until later in the year, when we launch our new brochures, both old and new addresses and numbers will still be operational.
However, if you ususally contact us through e-mails, please note that these will not be changing.

Very Sad News
Last month we were greatly saddened by the loss of an important person in the existence of High Point Holidays.
Tony Armstrong was a founding partner of the company and it was his love of walking in the mountains that helped to inspire the formation of High Point Holidays and its aims. Tony is the father of the remaining partners, William and Mark. As youngsters we were taken by our parents to walk in the mountains of North Wales and the Lake District. Tony was also taken by his father into the hills to walk, as William now takes his son into the mountains of France. Read William's Tribute to Tony, here.
