The stormy seas in our own lives, in all probability, take a different form than the one described in today’s Gospel reading (Mt 8:23-27). Nonetheless, they are real and our reactions can be very close to those of the apostles. We might even think that Jesus is asleep in our boat, not paying attention to our circumstances at all. Then, we cry out to Him, “Lord, save us!” When He gives us His grace, when He answers our prayer, our reaction is to be amazed: “I can’t believe it!”

We ask Him for something. He answers our prayer; and we are surprised! Firm faith (in contrast to “little” faith) would stand in awe and wonder at His goodness and power; but it would not be surprised. It would be full of trust and it would be deeply grateful.

Dominic’s times, like our own, were marked with strife, turmoil, and lack of solidarity among people. Dominic did not despair; he did not stand idly by. He prayed to know God’s will and for the strength to do it. And he went out to preach. The healing power of Truth spread like a fire across the earth, just as it was predicted in the dream his mother had before his birth. His faith led to trust, to zeal, to preaching.

May we, amidst our storms, pray for Our Lord’s help and trust that He will answer. May we respond with faith-filled gratitude and, by our lives, spread His message.

Saint Dominic, preacher of the Gospel, pray for us.
