July  2015

We had so much fun in June! Thanks for being a part of it! We have a few pictures to share and don't miss our recap in the "Thanks to You!" section below.

As a quick reminder, don't forget to follow us on Twitter and watch our Facebook page - as new events are planned throughout the month, we typically promote there, as well as adding to our website's "Upcoming Events". The site's "News" page is also where to go if you ever misplace this email!

Our two main event series this summer are the Park Crawl with Near West Rec every Tuesday morning  and the Fairview Park Ice Cream Socials with LAND studio on Thursday evenings. The specific activities planned each week for both are found in the schedule (below and on our site). As a reminder, there will be NO ice cream social at Fairview Park this Thursday, July 2; but it will be back next Thursday, July 9.

AND  - if Thursday evening treats are quite enough for you... join us for a Kids tour of Mitchell's on Friday, July 31st! see the Upcoming Events section below for more information.

Finally's we hope everyone will save the date for our Health Partner's annual event! Saturday, August 29th will be Neighborhood Family Practice's 35th Anniversary Celebration - honoring Robert Eckhardt, Executive Vice President of the Cleveland Foundation. The event will be at their Detroit Shoreway Office from 7-10:30 pm (with a VIP reception starting at 6:30) Click here to purchase your tickets and register today!
So many people to thank for everything in the month of June!
  • Our Summer Member Party at Edgewater Yacht Club was a great success due to the help of Ashley Taseff, Jenn Ettorre, Katherine Readey, Abby Weaver, Mitchell's Ice Cream, Rob Baraona, Sarah Ryzner and the rest of the board!

  • Yoga in the Parks at Lincoln Park was so much fun! Thank you  Neighborhood Family Practice as our sponsor, Tiu Gennert and Darlene Kelbach from Studio 11 for leading the session, Abby Weaver as scooper extraordinaire, and Ann Garland for pulling it all together. The June 30th Yoga was postponed due to rain - stay tuned for the new date!

  • The May Kidical Mass rode after the last newsletter came out so this is our first opportunity to thank everyone for helping but we are excited to be a part of these rides again this year as Jacob VanSickle of Bike Cleveland and Ashely Taseff help us teach our kids how to ride safely in the city. There are so many people who help each month, Norma Polanco Boyd, Nigamanth Sridhar are always a big part of making it happen! Thanks to everyone, ride on! The June ride through Old Brooklyn was postponed due to soggy streets, but be sure to join us Sunday, July 26th for the next ride!

  • The Park Crawl continues to be a community favorite! Thank you Near West Rec, Steve Kachmyers, and Katie Zucca for the Tuesday morning fun!

  • Our  Fairview Park Ice Cream Socials started in June! Thank you to Mitchell's for donating the ice cream for our Summer Kickoff, Thank you LAND Studio for sponsoring the treats all other weeks and coordinating the programming. So far we've made flowers for the Kentucky Garden fence with Upcycle, made tie-dye t-shirts with Art House, and enjoyed chalk art with Hector Castellanos. Paul Ettorre and Amy Kulisheck deserve great thanks for picking up and keeping order as treats are distributed to all the kids and parents.

If you are interested in helping us make more happen in your neighborhood or if you have an idea for something specific,  please let us know!

BE AN ACTIVE FAMILY
TIPS for becoming active as a family

Physical activity is important for children and adults of all ages.
Being active as a family can benefit everyone. Adults need 2½ hours a week of physical activity, and children need 60 minutes a day.
Follow these tips to add more activity to your family’s busy schedule.

SET TIMES
Determine when the whole family is available.  Devote part of that time to activity.  Maybe after or before dinner.  Start you weekends with a walk after breakfast.

PLAN AHEAD and KEEP TRACK
Write the activity on the family calendar.  Let the kids be part of the planning.  Allow them to check it off after completing the activity.

YES! INCLUDE WORK AROUND THE HOUSE
Involve the kids in yard work and other chores.  They can help rake, weed, plant or vacuum.

USE WHAT IS AVAILABLE
Keep is simple.  Plan activities that require little to no equipment or facilities.  Jogging, hiking, walking, hide and seek, tag and dancing are just a few examples.  Look into community flyers and recreation centers for family programs.

BUILD NEW SKILLS
Enroll kids in programs they might enjoy such as dance, sports or dance.  Help them practice.

PLAN FOR ALL WEATHER CONDITIONS
Choose some activities that do not depend on weather.  Community recreation center, walking at the mall, or active video games.

TURN OFF THE TV
Set a rule that no one can spend more than 2 hours a day watching TV, playing video games or using computer devices. Go for a walk in one of our beautiful Metro Park trails.

START SMALL
Introduce one new family activity at a time.  You can always make activities go for a little longer.

INCLUDE FRIENDS
Invite others to join.  Go bowling, play miniature golf, or create an obstacle course.

HAVE REWARD DAYS
When it’s time to celebrate as a family do something special.  Plan a trip to the zoo or beach.

Stay Well,
Neighborhood Family Practice
