Seeking young people to re-invent waste

Young people will solve problems and put their creativity to the test in Young Re-inventor of the Year 2015! This exciting initiative encourages young people to re-use, re-purpose and up-cycle used items instead of throwing them away. Open to individuals, classes, schools or community groups in Switch your
thinking Council areas, Young Re-inventor of the Year is accepting registrations now.

This year, Young Re-Inventor of the Year adopts a food theme. Participants are challenged to re-invent rubbish into something new to help grow, package or store food or reduce food waste and submit a photo of their creation. It’s that simple.

All entrants will receive a participation certificate and have the opportunity to exhibit their re-invention at the Canning River Eco-Education Centre in Wilson and on switchyourthinking.com. Overall winners will receive a tailored sustainability pack to support them in their waste reduction and sustainability actions.

Waste less with Plastic Free July

July is the perfect time of year to reflect on waste. Plastic Free July is an initiative developed in 2011 right here in Perth Western Australia. Last year 14 000 people, schools, businesses and organisations participated across 69 countries.
The idea is simple; participants attempt to refuse single-use plastic during July each year. “Single-use" includes plastic shopping bags, plastic cups, straws, plastic packaging...basically anything that's intended only to be used once and then discarded. If refusing all single-use plastic sounds too daunting this time, try the top four challenge: Say no to plastic bags, bottles, takeaway coffee cups and straws.
