After graduating from Yale University with a MFA, John Foote moved to Florence, Italy where he studied drawing and painting. He then moved to London and became the first American elected to full membership in the British Federation of Artists and he also served as lecturuer for the English Fine Arts Society. During his five years in England he completed a series of portraits of British actors including Sir Lawrence Olivier, Sir John Gielgud and Sir Ralph Richardson and his work was featured in the book Drawing the Figure in Pastel. After returning from Europe, Foote taught at the Art Student's League in New York City and for 32 years at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan. He is a member of the Salmagundi Club and gave private lessons at his Manhattan studio. In addition to portraiture, Foote specializes in landsacpe, floral and still-life painting.

Bobbi Kilty is a painter in combined media and encaustic, who retired after 36 years as an Interior Design educatior at two universities --- Washington State and Michigan State. She received her MFA from UCLA and studied Sumie (contemporary Japanese brush painting) at Japan's Osaka University. Now retired as MSU Interior Design Program Director, she is exploring acrylic, watercolor and encaustic painting, which is an ancient Egyptian painting technique using hot wax and a torch or heat gun.  A strong connection with nature is evident in the work, incorporating figure drawing, portrait painting, live animal representation, and landscape views. Kilty states, “As a designer, I collected found objects from nature over many years, fascinated by their growth and formation patterns as well as functions. The spiral and radial forms that are evident in many of my paintings are a response to these patterns.”

This exhibit is sponsored by Davis Cartage Company & Meijer Inc.
Bobbi Margolis, who is from Okemos and is the Mid Michigan Art Guild President, won 1st prize for her mixed media piece.
Oksum Kim received the 2nd place award for her watercolor painting.
Carolyn Texera, of DeWitt, received the 3rd place award for her oil painting.

2015 Motor Coach Adventure

To Frederick Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park

You are Invited to Tour Meijer Gardens with SAC!
The Shiawassee Arts Center is offering a trip via Indian Trails motorcoach to the Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park in Grand Rapids Friday, July 24th. Included is a guided tour of the special exhibit Splendors of Shiga: Treasures from Japan, which displays more than 60 Japanese works of art from the 8th century to the present day. This unique exhibition is a partnership with Shiga, our sister state in Japan. From shigaraki pottery, to more delicate scrolls, screens, kimono, and functional objects, works on paper and in wood will change every two months, protecting the artifacts while providing guests with a new view of the exhibition. These rare objects follow one of several themes: the landscape of Shiga, beauty in daily life, the four seasons, portraiture, animals and birds, devotional imagery, among others. A video on Shiga, its art and culture, will play continuously and maps and other information about Shiga will be available to guests. Lunch is available in the museum cafeteria and there will be time to visit other galleries, take a tram tour of the sculpture park and visit the gift shop. The motorcoach leaves from the Arts Center at 9am and returns at 5pm. Cost is $40 SAC members and $45 non-members --- reservations due by July 10th.
