A Message from Your County Manager

Davie County Residents,
We hope this monthly message finds you enjoying a great summer in Davie County!  We are again pleased to bring you another issue of the County Connection and hope that you will help us spread the word about this communication tool with other Davie County residents.

As referenced in our last issue, the budget process for 2015-16 has been in full swing and as of June 15th, was officially adopted for the 2015-16 fiscal year.  The following are highlights that will go into effect July 1, 2015:
  • An increase of $775,000 to Davie County Schools was approved.  This funding now places Davie County near the top in per pupil funding compared to other school districts in the regions.
  • Approximately $2 million in technology improvements were approved.  This includes the purchase of the Viper/800 radios and 911 consoles, allowing the county to enable law enforcement and other emergency agencies to communicate via improved communication channels.
  • A portion of the County's Capital Improvement Plan is included in the adopted budget and will result in renovations to the courthouse, Central Davie Education Center, Davie Little League Complex, Brock Auditorium and Gymnasium, county administrative building; as well as a canopy for Senior Services and infrastructure pertaining to the East Davie Pump Station.
  • Water and Sewer rates (with the exception of irrigation) will remain flat.
  • A 10.8-cent real estate property tax increase was approved.  This is the only tax rate increase recommended and is required to repay bonds that were sold to pay for the construction of a new Davie County High School, which was approved by voters in May of 2014.  This debt will be serviced over 17 years and taxpayers can expect to see the property tax increase in their August Real Estate Property Tax Bill.
  • An additional $111,000 was added to the budget to provide for an additional detective in the Davie County Sheriff's Office and a food/nutrition case worker in Social Services.
  • As part of the 2015-16 budget, the county is requesting that the Town of Bermuda Run increase their portion of the funding required to have an officer dedicated to the Town, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  Currently, the Town pays $22,000 per year for this level of service which equates to five full-time deputies (salary and benefits).  Five full-time deputies costs the county annually $231,581.  The county is asking the Town of Bermuda Run to pay half of that amount, or an increase of $92,000.

In closing, we continue to encourage you to stay informed and contact decision makers at both the local and state level as you feel necessary.  We also would like to take a moment to wish you a Happy July 4th and encourage you to view this informational video detailing this date in our history, produced by Davie County Government.

Sincerely,

Mike Ruffin, County Manager
