Adena Springs Ranch – In the Court of Public Opinion (2012)
By: Robert L. Knight

When was the last time you saw a two-page ad in the Gainesville Sun? Probably not that long ago. It was bought by another billion dollar company. BP Oil has spent millions trying to convince us that the Gulf of Mexico was not harmed by more than 206 million gallons of crude oil from their Deep Water Horizon drilling platform. Now a lawyer working for Adena Springs Ranch, thinks a 2-page newspaper ad will convince the public that he can pump more than 13 million gallons per day (4.8 billion gallons per year) from the aquifer and cause no harmful affects on groundwater levels or flows at nearby Silver Springs. Volunteers Needed for Springs Baseline Assessments

This year the FSI has received three springs license tag grants from the Wildlife Foundation of Florida to conduct baseline assessments for the lower Ichetucknee River, the lower Rainbow River, and the lower Wakulla River. The Institute is in need of volunteers to assist with the collection of specific types of ecological data during the sampling periods. Volunteers with a wide range of prior experience will be welcome to participate on the following dates:
  • July 20-31, 2015: Ichetucknee River
  • August 31- September 11, 2015: Rainbow River
  • October 12-23, 2015: Wakulla River
The Institute will focus its efforts on the areas below:
  • Water quality (recording data sondes, field parameters along longitudinal and vertical profiles, analytical sampling, etc.)
  • Physical indices (bathymetry, velocity, discharge, residence time, sediment nutrients and texture, solar inputs and light attenuation, etc.)
  • Biology (primary produces, invertebrates, fish, herptiles, birds and mammals, human use counts, etc.)
Teams of three to four volunteers will be directed by an experienced scientist and all volunteers will receive training necessary to accomplish their portion of the project. Each team will only work from two to four days during the two-week synoptic period.
