Ready or not, summer is already upon us. The weather in Hawai‘i is warming up, the kids are on summer break, traffic has eased a bit, and if you can believe, we are half-way through the year. Like most years, this year has gone by quickly, and we have been fortunate to have heard from three fantastic speakers thus far: Kelly King spoke about entrepreneurship; Jessica Munoz opened our eyes to the world of human trafficking; and last month we heard about women in the military through the eyes of local girl, Crissy Gayagas.
Your OWL board is excited to have the remainder of this year’s speakers already lined up. Kicking off our final group of speakers in July is Meda Chesney-Lind, Ph.D., Professor of Women’s Studies at the University of Hawai‘i. Following in September, we will hear from Laura Beeman, Head Coach for the University of Hawai‘i Women’s Basketball program. And finally in November, we are bringing back well-known author and educator, Maya Soetoro-Ng. We couldn’t be happier with the extraordinary stories of our next three speakers!
Last bit of good news, my husband and I are expecting our second child at the end of October. I am fortunate to be having a healthy pregnancy, but as any working mother knows, life is all about maintaining balance. A co-worker once told me he tries to do three good things every day. He tries to do one good thing for his family, one good thing for his clients and one good thing for himself. So simple, yet so challenging!
I look forward to seeing you all in July.
Julie
What We Heard
May 11
Chrissy Gayagas
Chief Relationship Officer
Dawson by Stacia Murray and Kristi Bates
Growing up in a military family, Christine Gayagas, Chief Relationship Officer, Dawson, was determined from a young age, to attend West Point Academy. She didn't know that women made up less than 10% of the students at that time, but it was the only college to which she applied, and she made the most of her time there. That purpose and passion continued to serve her well as she thrived in her military career, eventually transitioning to life as a civilian in the business world. Equally important are what she calls her life pillars - ohana, culture, fitness, leadership and team building.
Having lived many years outside of Hawai‘i she would always share the aloha and the Hawaiian culture through hula. Her whole family was either born into the military or was married into the military, giving her and her family the opportunity to live all over the world.
Chrissy showed her leadership skills as a student at West Point, holding her ground in an incident with another student that demonstrated her ability to stay balanced and focused. She became team captain of her swim team and filled her time by staying active, which is her advice to any student. “Cooperate and graduate” she remembers, not only helped in day to day life, but could be applied even in life or death situations in combat.
Her military service sent her to Iraq, as well as to the frontline of disaster relief with Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita, helping to rebuild communities, duties she completed even while as a wife and mother. She says whenever she deployed, her family did too. They were ready with bags packed to come to care for her daughter while she and her husband were sent on missions. She ultimately made a decision to retire as she didn't want to miss out on her most important mission as a Mom. She has found that from combat boots to heels, leadership is leadership wherever you are, and that attitude is key in any endeavor.
